I am looking to make this a purchase, but before I do I need to ask...Can we have the light on without the fan on? We like to use the light as a night light in the kitchen!
Response from broan-nutone.comBy CustomerServiceBroanFebruary 28, 2020
Thank you for reaching out. Yes, the fan and light operate independently.

A great replacement for a previous Broan hood

We purchased this unit to replace a previous Broan product that had lasted us 20 years. We're very pleased with the look and performance of this hood. It seems very efficient, and we love the amount of light that it provides. The variable fan speed is great.

Beware of fit and damper
on February 4, 2019

We bought this hood to replace a 12 year old Broan Allure series hood. The hood has a pleasant appearance and some nice features. We have fixed 3.25" x 10" rigid vertical metal ducting. Since we were replacing a Broan, with another Broan, we figured the
fit would be the same. Well, it is, side to side. However, the rectangular vertical exhaust cut out for the new hood, is 1/2 inch closer to the back wall of the hood. Doesn't sound like much, but you can't fit it up to the existing fixed ducting, which in our case, was positioned based on the old model. This would not be a problem on new work.
We had to shim the back of the hood 1/2" from the wall to make it fit. So, beware if you are replacing an existing unit. (That particular dimension is not on the drawing either, so I could not compare it to my old model drawing).
BEWARE!
The biggest aggravation is that cheesy damper assembly. It is barely thicker than aluminum foil when compared to the old unit's damper assembly. It also had a reduced neck height, making it harder to determine if it was actually inside the duct as it should be.
Here's the kicker, the little tab that is supposed to keep it from opening more than 90 degrees is too short (no matter how you bend it), allowing the damper to open more than it should. The result......it stays open after you operate the unit on the two highest speeds. And, on high speed, it rattles loudly as that damper is so thin. I just don't understand why, what otherwise appears to be a quality (and expensive) product, comes with such a flimsy key part.
In hindsight, I should have used the old damper and drilled the hood to make it fit. What we ultimately did, is to attach some self stick furniture felt pads to the back of the damper so that it could not open past 90 degrees and at the same time, eliminate that rattle. I don't know how long that will last, but we will see. They can be replaced. You could also attach some type of flexible tubing or tip to that metal tab to make it longer, but that alone probably won't eliminate the rattle. And you want the damper to open as far as you can and still close so the efficiency of the machine is not affected.
I would have given the unit a better much better rating had this latter quality problem not existed. You would think Broan could do better than this.........
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Quiet Operator

Undated our kitchen appliances and replaced an older quiet and reliable Broan Allure model unit and connected to existing 7" round vertical ducting, running about 10 feet through the attic, to a roof vent cap. I looked at many other brands of vent hoods but decided on this one for cost and sound levels. Broan markets this 3-speed fan unit, model BCDJ130 using Sones as it's sound reference, saying 0.4 sones at normal (low) speed; 2.0 sones at medium speed and 5.5 sones on high speed. I measured the sound using a decibel app and found at low speed the sound measured 48db(a), medium speed at 64db(a) and high speed at 74db(a). The low speed is very quiet and medium speed is not very noticeable nor distracting, and it works for most cooking needs. Rarely do we use the high fan option and the sound difference is much louder and distracting. The LED lights work well and can be adjusted in brightness as well. The stainless look is nice but is not made with fingerprint resistant technology, so be aware it might need more effort to maintain appearance. Also, the mesh filters seem to be well made and Broan says dishwasher safe. Hopefully they last a long time as replacement filters- HPFA3B30 look to cost around $65-$75.
A little advise on installation: Broan likes to promote the EZ-1 installation brackets for "one-person" installation. I still recommend two people. I never felt confident with the EZ-1 brackets temporarily holding the unit in place while I connected the electrical wiring and adjusted the unit as I connected to the duct work. To avoid dropping the vent hood, I protected the stove top with a piece of plywood, placed an upside down 5-gal bucket on the plywood surface, and using my truck's tire jack & 1x4" board cut to the same length as the hood vent's width, I raised the hood vent into place. It worked like a charm and no mishaps. (Sorry, no photos of that, as I was busy...)

When I turn press the button to turn on the lights, the fan goes on as well and I have to manually turn it off. Is this standard or is there a way to disable the automatic turn on of the fan when I just want the lights?

We appreciate the time you took to reach out about your BCDJ130SS range hood. We are disappointed to hear there seems to be an issue with the controls. Please give the Broan Technical Support Team a call at 1-800-637-1453 so we can help troubleshoot and get your unit running properly again. We look forward to speaking with you soon. Thank you.
