S8 Active - good and irritating
on April 9, 2019

I converted from a S6 Active to the S8 Active because after years of good service, the S6 battery required too-frequent charging (2-3/day), and there were some other mysterious hiccups…. After several days using it, I’m basically happy with the new-to-me S8 Active. The phone audio and camera are improved, and it is a well-designed phone - except for one nit, see below. In fact, I grappled with two irritating nits, and in case that experience will be useful to another neophyte, here they are…
1. The S8 uses -C rather than –micro USB-. I didn’t notice this when I checked out the S8 online. USB-C has the advantage of working up or down. But I have dozens of devices and cables that use micro, and have been satisfied with that for years. The S8 came with one adapter and one cable. I routinely use six, so ordered a package of 5 for about [the moderator asked me to not say how little I paid Jeff Bezos]. Irritating.
2. On the advice of the ATT Protech who helped with the data transfer, I tried using the ATT Mobile Transfer app. It seemed to work but after an hour or so it froze at ‘2 min 57 sec remaining.’ After waiting for more than an hour, I finally killed it and used the transfer adapter and a micro-USB cable to connect the two phones, and that worked. But the result is 100’s of duplicated photos and other files. It’s been a chore eliminating those. Irritating.

Great Phone Held Back by Minor Design Flaws
on August 22, 2017

The good stuff:
1) Iris scanner is pretty cool. It unlocks it relatively fast with a tiny bit of practice.
2) Great battery life! On its first charge, with heavy use (downloading apps, unlocking and using it constantly, and being on conference calls) I've stretched it to 42 hours of use and still have 25% remaining. So happy to finally have a phone w/ a battery that lasts
3) Camera takes great pictures!.
4) Fast OS! Runs a live wallpaper and plenty of multitasking apps without any issues
5) Awesome battery conservation options
6) Waterproof and dustproofness will definitely be used.
Some things I wish they'd change:
1) Don't force me to use Bixby! Common, you make a super cool physical button my finger can actually reach and then it only serves one purpose, which is to use an annoying assistant that I have to talk to. I remapped this physical button, and am going to throw another fit at Samsung when they break the re-mappers again.
2) Why is the finger print button out of reach of any normal human's finger? Did aliens test the usability of the physical device?
3) No headphones.
In general, Samsung made a very nice phone that is as close as any has come to meeting my needs. They loaded it with annoying software and missed some simple design principles pretty tremendously. Still, it's the best option out there for people that want a tough, full-featured phone that'll last throughout any day of use.
ATT has heavily censored my review. Probably a good sign that you should look elsewhere for legitimate reviews of this product.

I Love It

I have had a few days to play with it now. The display is the best ever. The battery is long lasting. I love the bumpers on the corners. Very well made. The port for battery and download is USB C now is comes with a adapter. And the 3.5mm audio jack the best part of the phone for a audiophile.

Awesome Smartphone, Better Than iPhone By a Mile!

There are always going to be a few miserable people who could literally win the lottery, and still be miserable, who think / feel this phone is garbage, but it's NOT! It's worth every penny, and it is by far, the BEST, Samsung Galaxy Active to date! Amazing, out of this world battery life, lighting fast speeds, clear as crystal calls and speakerphone, absolutely gorgeous, radiant colors, great sounds, 64GB instead of 32GB, waterproof up to 5 feet, professional grade / quality photo and video, new features, and in short, as good as it gets in an Android-based smartphone! A+++++

Complexity of Phones

This phone has all the bells and whistles, and if enough time were spent, all these capabilities might be useful. For a person who just wants a dumb phone, this is not the one. If you don't like to be flooded with advertising interrupts, this is not the one. I don't like to say that, but it is true, I just wanted a phone for me.

So Far, So Good

I have only had it a couple of weeks and have not yet had a chance to use all the features such as the camera. I do not plan on testing the durability by dropping it. I know it is designed to take an impact, but I am not taking any chances. I bought a simple case to help improve my grip on the phone and also a glass screen protector to prevent scratches or other damage. It does charge much faster than my S7 and also seems to have a better battery life. So far, it has not overheated during charging or shown any other signs of temperature problems as the Note 7 did. I will update this review if I start to experience any problems or malfunctions.

FINALLY!
on August 16, 2017

I've been waiting on this phone for months and finally got it! I had the S6 Active and loved it, didn't and don't want to try any other phone. My boyfriend has the 7 active and can't wait to upgrade soon! We both live in the mountains, he's a wild land firefighter and I also work outside as well so this phone is perfect for our life style! Hopefully Samsung continues to make the Active!
