Love this grinder.

We purchased this in 2006 and it's still going strong. We did replace the burrs about a year ago, not because we had to, but just noticed it wasn't grinding as well as it had been. Working again like new. If I had to replace the grinder today I'd buy another in a minute.

Seems like it does what it is supposed to do

The burr grinder is, first of all, lovely to look at and a delight to use; it is heavy duty, and, it would appear, durable. This is the second burr grinder of this sort from KA that we have owned. The other lasted well over 15 years. And is still working, though it needs new burrs.

I owned one of these coffee grinders for years and loved it so much I bought one for daughter and daughter-in-law, and theirs are still going strong. Mine, the burrs became worn and at the time I needed to replace them, KitchenAid was no longer selling this grinder and no one there responded to my inquiries about where to find parts.. I found some dealers online who had replacement parts but were charging an outrageous amount for them, knowing they had us over a barrel without the needed parts. Sadly, I walked it out to the garage and put it in the box for charity and bought a different brand. I stumbled across this a couple of weeks ago, while looking for something else and immediately ordered a new one. It arrived today and I am a happy coffee drinker. It is smaller and lighter than the previous one, but that is not a problem for me. I ground up some beans and it works wonderfully well, just like the original. I am not sure what went on in the interim when it, or the parts weren't available previously , but i forgive them and celebrate the return. The only thing I see different that I might question is the collection jar doesn't fit tight to the machine. I only grind what I need as I need it, so that won't be a problem

Can be a wee bit messy, due to electrostatic charging/sticking of the finely ground coffee it produces, but a great grinder!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this as Christmas gift, and it’s wonderful! I have a percolator and espresso maker, and the ease of the grinding plus the taste!!! Smooth no bitterness at all. It is also very simple to use.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] When my old coffee grinder died I looked around for a new one. Internet searches just made me confused. All the reviews were mixed and they all looked like they were made of plastic. I had given up until I met someone that suggested Kitchen Aid. We talked about it and she liked how the Kitchen Aid grinder is built out of metal and glass. That sealed my decision. Kitchen Aid it will be.
When I got it home I was impressed at how sturdy it is. It is made the same way as my 30 year old Kitchen Aid mixer. The housing is solid metal which keeps the motor quiet. The bowls are each made from glass. The only plastic it the grind selector wheel and the hopper lid but they are made from a sturdy plastic that I'm sure will stand the test of time. The power switch on the side is the same steel toggle switch used on other Kitchen Aid appliances. Nothing fancy, just turn it on and when you have enough coffee you turn it off. I like how the hopper on the top of the unit has a lid with an air tight seal so I can leave beans inside without worrying about them getting stale.
While reading the instructions I was impressed that they describe how to take apart the grinder to clean it and adjust it so you can make the coffee as fine or as course as you want it. I haven't taken it apart yet but it looks easy.
The grinder comes with a nice, long handled scoop that reaches into the bowl without getting coffee grinds on my hands.
Overall I am very happy with my purchase. I know that this will last me for many years to come and I never have to go through the confusion of picking another coffee grinder.

Exploding Plastic Gears

I have been happy with this grinder for many years. I bought it because it was all metal after having too many plastic appliances bite the dust. This morning it was grinding away and suddenly stopped. Pulling the motor from the back of the housing and removing the planetary gears from the motor revealed that the drive shaft is plastic, and had sheared off from the reducing gears. Boo for plastic gear sets!

This grinder is a vertical flat-plate burr grinder, which provides a far superior grind to a blade "grinder" (blade grinders crush/masticate more than cut while burr grinders use progressively narrowing blades to slowly reduce the size of coffee bean particles). There are more expensive conical burr grinders that do offer advantages, but the quality of the grind isn't necessarily a whole lot different.
One thing another reviewer pointed out was issues with gravity-fed beans getting jammed up. This is a very minor problem that they chose to solve by doing the most complex, labor intensive, and unnecessary fix for. They essentially disassembled the machine and turned it upside down. OR you could poke at the beans a bit with a stick/spoon/other pointy object. Conical burr grinders tend to run much faster and feed directly into the grinding gears, so they may be less susceptible to this issue....but it's such a minor non-issue.
Also, the same person complained about the glass grind jar not being replaceable. Can't seem to find the "Replacement Parts" link under "Service and Support" on this very page??? You could literally build your own grinder with all the spare parts available for this grinder....every single part is there and has been for over a decade.
I've had my grinder for almost ten years now and couldn't be happier. Parts are available and minor quibbles are easily solved. A bit noisy, but it's a grinder so....
