I ordered the Defender thinking it was what I previously had and liked, but I was wrong: This case has a plastic screen which makes using the home button as well as letters close to the edges harder for me to tap hard enough to register. My phone does get dropped a lot which means this case would be desirable, but for the majority of my use, it is frustrating. I will either try to cut away the protective screen or get a Commander case or similar model.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I’ve used otter box cases ever since I had a IPhone 3GS, there were minor inconveniences that I notice for the longest time, the cover for the mute and charge port are still stressing the rubber out, which over time damages the case, the screen “saver” is a cheap piece of plastic that traps dirt and sand under it, doesn’t make good contact with the screen, and is overall a horrible experience.
The only way I would recommend a otter box to a friend is to also mention what other people do online. Such as removing the screen saver and replacing it with a screen saver that sticks onto the screen, removing the port covers. ETC. It’s very unfortunate that Otterbox never seem to care for the improvements that are needed to make the cases much more functional.

This version of the Defender Series is one of the last that has the built-in screen protector. We moved away from that feature to give customers the choice to add a higher-grade screen protector or go without one. The port covers should go the distance. If they happen to wear over time, we’ll be happy to set up an easy warranty replacement for you.

I buy only otter boxes. This is undoubtedly the worst otter box I have ever purchased. I can’t use the phone when it’s in the box and neither can anyone else in my family. I have purchased these for years. Not anymore. What good is it???
