I've owned my joule three and a half…

I've owned my joule three and a half months and used it about 6 or 7 times. It always had issues with my Android WiFi, but bluetooth worked fine. It cooked steaks great. Sous vide eggs were ok. Vegetables were good. Unfortunately it no longer works. The heating element doesn't heat and the impeller does not circulate water. Looking at online forums, these are not uncommon problems. I will probably try the Anova.

Broke down after less than 30 uses

Not sure what went wrong. I bought my Joule more than 2 years ago. warranty is only 90 days just as a warning. I don't use it very much but I have liked to cook fish with it. Does not seem like a complicated machine. Not sure if I should buy a new one if it breaks so easily.

Excellent, plain and simple

I have a kitchen lab that is well-equipped with a Buchi R-215 rotary evaporator (paired with a recirculating chiller rated for -40 degrees C, and a custom water-jacketed receiving flask), a 5L liquid nitrogen Dewar flask, and an immersion circulator by THE name brand for such devices. However, I travel for work. High-tech cookery away from my kitchen lab has always been a challenge. It is just not practical to travel with all of these culinary implements. Joule is much more portable, less expensive, and works as well as the laboratory-grade immersion circulator I have in the kitchen lab for a few servings at a time (10-20 liters water bath). I have not yet tried it head-to-head with the lab equipment for the full rated 40 liter water bath.

When the unit connects it works great…
on April 12, 2018

When the unit connects it works great with a quick preheat time for the water. However when you loose connection to the unit you lose all information regarding the timer function on restart. Another draw back is since you are setting the temperature with the WiFi feature once you loose connection you have to start the unit again. No way in telling what the current temperature is without connecting to the chef step. Just to mention that this unit is a replacement unit since my original unit kept loosing WiFi connection. Thanks Calvin

When my Joule works, I love it!
on April 12, 2018

When my Joule works, I love it! The only issue is that most times when I turn it on to cook, I have to factory reset it and set it up like new for my phone to see it. 9 times out of 10 it wont connect over bluetooth or wifi until I reset it. Once it is reset and connected, it works perfectly! I love the recipes in the app and the alerts built in so I dont have to stand over what I am cooking the whole time.

Joule as a device works amazing.
on April 13, 2018

Joule as a device works amazing. However, the app that makes Joule start the cooking has a few back draws that may affect how it ultimately works. for example, if I want to modify the temp or the time (most often); then I would need to start a new entry on my cooking log, instead of simply modifying it. Also, between operating systems as when using my ipad and my android smartphone, transferring from one device to the other often doesn't update the entire info of what my joule is doing (guess this has to do with the account updates, rather than the device or OS per se). I love working with joule, I use it as much as possible and I'm very glad I got one. Keep it up guys.

Durability issues but great food
on April 12, 2018

It worked great for about 8 months and made great food. After 8 months it stopped working consistently. I now have to do a full manufacturer reset every time I want to cook with it. When I initially try to cook with it either has a "critical error" or cannot connect to Bluetooth. Customer service has been helpful in resolving the issue, however so far I've had issues with a long term fix. The food is still great but it is a pain trying to get the thing to start working initially.

Worked fine for two uses
on April 13, 2018

Worked fine for two uses, and now it shorts out my kitchen GFI every time i try to start a cooking cycle. I'm working with CS to resolve the problem, but don't have a lot of spare time to sit around trouble shooting, so this is super inconvenient, especially for a four month old product that has barely been used.
