After 6 years of use and abuse, my joule died on me... Critical error. Customer service was phenomenal. I didn't and wouldn't consider any other brand/model... They are all too big and clunky, or don't heat up fast enough. Ignore reviews saying you need an onboard control option to supplement the app. It's just another cost creating, space occupying feature that is most vulnerable to malfunction. Besides, if you don't have a mobile device after the early aughts of the 21st century, your probably not cooking sous vide in the '20s... I said what I said. This is THE consumer model to buy if want the best one and don't mind paying a little more to know that you have the BEST.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I love Joule!

I love Joule!.. Im not a chef or even a good cook. Im just a regular person who struggled making lunch for me and my husband and decided to give it a try to Joule. It really simplifies my life in the kitchen, I can cook in advance for many days! and minimizes the chances of me overcooking everything! I have a couple of suggestion for the app. It would be nice to be able to save my own "times/temps" by name. And also, to have new/more recipes there to try. But ChefSteps, I follow you guys before launching Joule and you were amazing already.. Joule was just the cherry on top of the ice cream. Good job guys.

Flexible and useful tool. Needs practice to use.

So the Joule sous vide tool can take some learning. Its not immediate satisfaction. You have to learn to sear it properly as to render the fat/connective tissues etc. I found myself pre-cooking the food to be rarer than how I really want it so i could sear more. However, that's not really an issue for me. A few weeks in of practicing and getting used to it, using Joule is pretty indispensable. I made chocolate, eggs, steaks and even custard with this, and not to mention it's also a great means of thawing food for non-sous vide cooking. I think that it's great for the limitations of what it is meant to do.

My Joule died on December 24th

My Joule died on December 24th, late in the evening, as I was getting steaks ready to cook overnight. Got on line with the customer support people and they helped me. I was able to get through Christmas dinner and they sent me a new one out right away. What I didn't realize is that you need to clean your Joule once a month. It would be a great add on feature if Joule had a setting that reminded me to do that. In writing this I realized I haven't done it in a couple of months. Aside from that one problem (my fault) my Joule has been awesome and I enjoy throwing in frozen chicken, steaks, - whatever - when I leave for work and having them ready when I get home...wonderful product, the app on my phone works great...My son-in-law bought one on my recommendation and loves it too.

I love using my Joule

I love using my Joule. i started cooking sous vide a while ago and realized how much I like the way food tastes, cooked that way. I can't imagine a juicier steak, chicken or turkey breast cooked any other way. I don't always do a lot of seasoning, so I really appreciate the intrinsic flavor of the foods I'm cooking--and sous vide brings that out better than any other cooking method. I love the Joule because it's so small it fits in a drawer, it's precise, and the app is so easy to use. I love the fact that my husband (a NON-COOK in all capital letters) can tell our Echo to set the Joule to a specific temperature if he gets home before me, and then all I have to do is drop the food in.
I had done tons of research on immersion heaters and decided that the Breville was best one. Reviews would always mention the great customer service but that really didn't matter much to me. The one item that won me over was the ability to program the sous vide via your cell phone and to be able to watch it's progress while i was at work. Some people decide not to buy it because of this feature. They want to be able to see the temperature and time by looking at the unit itself. I really think they are afraid of technology or do not have a reliable or any internet. Well Fred Flintstone, good luck to you. The future is here and the Breville is on that cutting edge. This sous vide works flawlessly and is the best. You can pick up cheaper units, but this is the time you want to buy the steak and not the hamburger. I went to use by sous vide and instantly got an error message on my phone. After investigating what happened one of the propellers had broken loose. I remembered every talking about the customer service when i would read the reviews. I decided to email them to see if this was repairable. I was way past the warranty period. I got a quick reply asking if i could send a copy of the original receipt and a picture of the propellers. Sent that information off and within the hour was informed that a new one was on the way, at no charge! Wow! I couldn't believe what i was reading. Sure enough, afew days later my new sous vide was here. Breville really deserves an extra star for that service. The two things they recomend is when you clean your sous vide, half water and half distilled vinegar, is once it reaches operating temperature, let in run for 30 minutes after that. Also add a tablespoon of distilled vinegar to each quart of water when you cook. I have my sous vide run for 72 hours at a time making vanilla extract and at first, would be nervous i was aaking too much out of the unit. It would run that cycle and not miss a beat. It's a beast! Please don't make the mistake and have to utter the words, i should have bought a Breville.
