Around 23 years ago I bought the Bodum Santos siphon coffee maker. Over that time it became stained, the strainer filter broke which required a Rube Goldberg fix to hold it in place. A few months ago the caraffe finally developed a crack at the top that allowed air to leak into the system. So, I began a hunt for its replacement. The KitchenAid Siphon 40 oz. Coffee Brewer is a worthy replacement and I bought one five weeks ago.
I’m writing this review to express my experience relating to some of the negative opinions given by others. Difficulty in cleaning…not so much, imho. Yes, the grounds can stick and that requires wiping them to remove them. Yes, the construction is glass, requiring care in handling. But, no staining, a big plus as the unit continues to look brand new after cleaning. Yes, the caraffe construction has a flat lip inside that requires some contortion and gentle shaking to get the last drops out, but, a little ingenuity and three or four rinses accomplishes the job. And, yes, the opening is too small to get my small hand inside to wipe dry. But, I continually make coffee and let it sit in the caraffe, so..so what.
I found that I needed the addition of the cloth filter after my first two attempts at using only the metal filter and having coffee ground sludge in the caraffe. Using the cloth keeps the fine grounds from entering the caraffe. I have the Bodun Electric Burr Bistro grinder and have the setting on the second dot from the finest grind setting. I leave the cloth attached to the filter and clean it under the faucet stream. I’ve used the filter for about a month and it seems to be holding up well. It is stained, but, again, so what.
I applaud the ingenuity of the designers of this coffee maker. The filter wand locks in place with a twist and can accommodate the thickness of the wrap-around cloth filter. The upper unit locks in place to the caraffe with a twist aided by magnetic attraction. There is nothing that will loosen and get out of place while the unit is doing its thing. Brilliant! Oh, yes, after the coffee has been made and the upper unit is removed and placed in the well-designed stand, the cover for the caraffe twists into alignment and is held in place. It guides a stream of coffee into your cup without having a drip or two leave the rim and stain the front of the caraffe. Again, brilliant!
I’ve always microwaved cold coffee, so the caraffe not having a warm setting is of no consequence.

Bought two, both broke. Poor construction.

The upper pot broke on both units but in different ways. On one, the plastic handle just fell apart after a few months - not repairable. On the other, the bottom that creates the seal started to crack and can no longer hold a vacuum so the coffee never makes it all the way down.
Never used dishwasher, used with care every time. Bottom half on both are solid. It’s just the stupid chambers seem to be made by another company altogether. Won’t buy a third.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Excellent Siphon design. Great looks and makes a clean cup of coffee. Only real complaint is it's a pain to clean. Coffee grinds are not easy to remove and the lip on the carafe causes water to be retained unless completed inverted. Still an lovely siphon that's strong and reliable. Simple to use.

Makes the Best coffee ever

I never really liked coffee but married a coffee drinker. This maker has made me a convert. I like the coffee this maker makes. Not sure what it does but whether we load plain old coffee or fancy coffee it makes a cup I like. The only thing that keeps me from giving it a 5 is the cleaning. But worth it. Don't think I will ever own another coffee maker.

i've had 3 siphon brewers, bodem pebo, gourmia digital and this one. i was using the pebo when i ran across the kitchen aid and grabbed it immediately because of the automation. not only is it extremely durable (if you have had any other siphon brewer, you do know how fragile they are) it is totally automated. fill, turn it on and walk away...in 10 minutes you have a quality pot of coffee. no babysitting thru the whole process. only complaint, it will not be totally ground free, even with the cloth filter and it does cool down fast.

Fine quality German glass??

I had this product for less than a month and it was on it's stand and fell off the counter landing on its stand. The glass is barely 1/8" thick

I purchased the Siphon coffee maker as soon as I saw it. The Siphon pulls the flavor from the coffee in a way no other maker does. We love it so much we purchased one for another coffee lover. If you love coffee you must have one and also pickup a coffee mill!! Oh, you will want to watch it brew!!!!
