I am a long time Norelco shaver user (40+ yrs.) I purchased the Norelco 9800 after my old rechargeable Norelco died (it must have been at least 10 or 12 years old.) I use this daily and get an excellent shave. The battery seems to last forever (I know it doesn't!?!) and the variable speeds do work. I do miss, however, the built-in pop-up trimmer and lack of a plastic cover for the shaving heads (to use while traveling.) The charging cord is super long - the shaver will not operate while plugged in so why the long charging cord? A short (12-18 inches) would have been more than satisfactory. I'm being "picky", I know. Overall, the Norelco 9800 was an excellent purchase and I hope to have it for a long time.
Pros: consistently close shave
Cons: no pop-up trimmer

The shave is great and fast. Norelco has been my shaver for the last 50+ years and every new model that I have purchased seems to find a way to improve itself over the last model. The only negative is the a stand for the shaver is not included in the package.

I have been using Norelco shavers for 55 years, i paid the most for this shaver than I have ever paid. I expect it to perform far better than previous models, not so. I have had this shaver several months and it is not staying charged like it should nor does it shave as closely and it did at first. I had a similar shaver to this previously and when I ordered replacement heads the shaves were never as good as when it was new.
Cons: does not stay charged very long, does not cut as closely as it did when new.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Requires longer shaving and not as close

I purchased the 9800 (my third Norelco) in June 2016 and have given it and my face several months to break in--but I am not able to achieve near as close as my now-retired Spectra with the HQ8 blades. I don't have a particularly heavy beard but even after a 5-6 minute shave I am left with visible "stubble", sandpaper face, and the 5 o'clock shadow is showing up at noon. I've tried it with a pre-shave lotion but saw no difference.
Since I had purchased ahead on a package of HQ8 blades that would not work with the 9800, I just bought a much cheaper 4100 and find it is giving me the shave I remembered, baby-bottom smooth, and much shorter shaving time.
The 9800 came with a beard trimmer that works well for long whiskers, but rather pricey for it's limited use.

Pros: battery level readout, long battery life, lightweight and easy to handle
Cons: unable to achieve a close shave, requires extended time and multiple passes, awkward cleaning process

For a while I used my old shaver as this was not giving me close shave by talking to a representative and getting replacement shaver head it is working very well.
