Nice and easy

I've been using Turbo Tax for many years. Had some trouble with my 2015 return and Audit defense took care of everything. No complaints!
What's great about it: Every step is explained with help at your fingertips.
What's not so great: Can't find any

Software not ready for primetime
on March 7, 2018

S-Corp-More poorly tested than the C-Corp portion of the product. Miscalculated maximum 1st year deduction on Automobile as of March 3rd. Corrected in a software update on March 4, yet the software still says the correct amount is too high and will not allow e-filing. In other places said leave blank if zero, but in error review said item could not be blank. Cannot navigate back to data entry from identified errors. Can only go to form, which means you have to override or spend significant amounts of time to go back to find where the data was entered. Had to override items to get a correct return, but alas now I cannot e-file. JUNK SOFTWARE.
Skipped a year using product for S and C Corp because intuit decided it would not comply with NJ efile requirements. Then it would not transfer data from TaxAct software or pull data from 2015 when I used Turbo Tax. Come to find out I still cannot e-file my NJ return because of errors in their software. Fortunately, NJ says they will still accept mailed returns.
C-Corp- Calculated Amortization incorrectly, fully amortizing in year 13 of 15 year term. Not to mention Learn More in step by step did not include Intangible Assets as an item to enter here. Kept waiting for the program to tell me where to enter.
Overall it is just the same Intuit overcharging and under-delivering with a poorly tested program and no customer service!
What's not so great: Very poor navigation/incorrect calculations

Easiest tax software I've used
on March 7, 2018
Posted by: Arecibo2
I've used one or two other tax software packages over the years. None of them make things as easy as TurboTax. In addition, TurboTax does not allow you to make errors, which sometimes occurs with other software.
What's great about it: Everything ticks and ties
What's not so great: It's more expensive than others

No Ohio Forms
on March 7, 2018
Posted by: skshaw54
Having to rekey everything to do an Ohio return is very time consuming. Should at least be able to download basic information into a set of Ohio forms, then let you finish up Ohio on your own. I do multiple returns so this is impossible for me.
Will find another solution in the future.
Not sure why file did not pick up changes I made and translate initially to the K-1s. Almost sent out improper K-1s.
What's great about it: Simple progressive approach
What's not so great: No State return. Made changes and they did not translate to K-1 forms.

Walk Me Through Needs Improvement

I have been using TurboTax Premier to handle my rental property. I really like how it breaks down all the deductions and asks you about what you did, so you can enter more expenses. I had a partnership this year, so I purchased the Home & Business software, only to find that I could not use it because it does not offer the option to complete a Form 1065. For this reason, I bought the Business version. This Business software was a big disappointment. It does not provide a detailed "walk me through it" option and many of the deductions are clumped together. You pretty much already have to know everything that you are eligible to deduct. People want to use TurboTax because they are not experts and would like more insight into what kinds of things should be entered. It would be nice if the "General" deductions section was broken into more categories that the software then summed up for you. I had to remember to add all these random deductions at the end. The software could prompt to enter these things individually, like it does with rental properties in the Premier version. There is a lot of room for improvement in the Business version. If you have a business, do not use the Home & Business version.
What's great about it: The help sections provided some useful information
What's not so great: Many of the deductions are clustered together without providing many hints on the types of deductions to enter.

Bugs in the date field
on March 7, 2018
Posted by: Kurtmos
I entered sale information for securities with a sale date generated by the program. At the review portion it flagged the dates as errors but didn't allow corrections, it would not allow E-file so I had to print the return and mail it cost me more money, and time.
What's great about it: easy to follow interview
What's not so great: program caused errors that it could not fix

Still need to keep good records, but overall was pretty easy. Some more clarification on some items would be even better.
What's great about it: Step by step is nice
What's not so great: More clarification on some things

For my small business that's negative in the income this year, and cannot afford a tax accountant, the software is really helpful and easy to use.
The big surprise is not able to import tax information from QuickBook Online despite I pay monthly fee to record all business spending.
What's great about it: Product guides the items so i won't forget any deductions or file forms
What's not so great: Cannot import from QuickBook Online account
