Oil Lease Bonus Payment
on March 5, 2018

Sometime when an oil company leases your land, they will pay a 'signing bonus' up front; usually on a $ per acre basis. This is then reported on a 1099-MISC. This is for subsurface rights only and so the 'rental use' versus 'personal use' on Sch E can in fact equal more than 365 days because the owner can continue to use the surface. The only way that I could circumvent the coding is to simply claim 365 on rental and zero on personal, even though this is incorrect.
What's not so great: Code written by someone who doesn't understand the concept

Great Tool

I use TurboTax every year to calculate and file my taxes. I also use it to go back later and calculate different scenarios representing changes that I might think of making. This helps me to keep my withholding amounts in the right range to avoid gross deficits or overpayments. It also helps me to know the eventual impact of changes in withdrawal rates of my IRA.
What's great about it: Turbotax lets me do "what if"
What's not so great: it has difficulty accepting data on a regular non contributary pension plan 1099

Stop raising rates so much every year.

This year, it cost me $140 total to use turbo tax. My parent's tax guy charges $130 to itemize theirs with free efiling. I think this is my last year using Turbo tax. The hidden fees make it no longer worth it to do it myself when I can pay someone to do it for less...
What's great about it: Saves my info
What's not so great: SO MANY HIDDEN FEES THAT GO UP EVERY YEAR!!!

Fifteen years satisfied

The process of using this is straightforward. I have done my own taxes, by hand for about 50 years until I was introduced to TurboTax by having it added to a new computer I bought about 15 years ago. That introduction convinced me that this was the way to go, avoiding errors and not needing to do all the calculations along the way.
It is more than worth the cost each year.
What's great about it: Covers everything in order not to miss anything
What's not so great: Nothing particularly
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have used Turbo Tax f9or a few years now to prepare my tax returns and it was easier than ever this year. I often had problems knowing where to enter my Social Security income but not this year. I prepare my State Tax return by hand because I usually only get a small State return and it costs too much for Turbo Tax. I'd like to see the price go down next year.
What's great about it: Easy to use, accurate, thorough
What's not so great: Costs too much

TurboTax Basic 2017 Comments

Finally can use this basic version-no IRA distributions, real estate transactions, or stock sales. I think many of the complaints are from folks who don't understand the higher-level verification and protection offers we see in the later part of the filing process. We are offered these as additional-cost items only if we choose them. Not mandatory. I've used TurboTax software for many years.
What's great about it: Easy, fast for filing uncluttered Return

Good service.. but more than I wanted to spend

This is a review of my experience with the Turbotax website and program.
I found myself frustrated that the free online filing option did not work for me. This led me to buy the full version tax and then I was surprised to have to purchase state as well as agree to a processing fee.
With other options out there such as credit karma it is concerning that processing fees will apply each year if I choose to use TurboTax.
The free service Inituit offers did not work because after hitting "continue with your return" a blue screen appeared with a revolving graphic. It never loaded. I tried several browsers, cleared all cache and cookies. Still nothing.
I am hoping you would be able to refund the cost of turbo tax to me for my inconvenience. The free service did not work for me, why should I have to pay.
The product works great, just frustrated with the experience.
What's great about it: Straight forward, good at making sure you obtain every benefit
What's not so great: Online version is free
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
