Great successor to HL-1440

I bought the HL-5450DN to replace my Brother HL-1440 laser, which I'd used for 10 years. The old one had been a great printer -- reliable, inexpensive to operate -- until the quality of print began to fail and the cost of replacing the drum again didn't make economic sense. So I bought a new version, the HL-5450DN. It set up quickly without a hitch. The new one has automatic duplex -- a nice bonus. I have been using it for several weeks and I'm very happy. It goes to sleep when I'm not using it, like the HL-1440. I'm very satisfied, recommend it highly.

Good Little Network Printer

We use this daily in our shipping department. It prints sharp and clear documents relatively fast. The first one developed an internal printing problem, but Brother replaced it quickly under warranty. Simple and easy to set up and use. It's a good little network printer.

Double the Pleasure

I have had the machine for about a month and it has been great.
Easy and fast to do two sided copies which is really appreciated.
A little loud but worth if for the speed.

Replacement

I replaced my 5250DN with this model when the time came to replace the drum. The price of this new printer was only $7 more than the price of the drum. I think it is deliberately priced that way to get you to buy a new printer. This printer is fast and the quality is good. On the negative side it is a little noisier than the 5250DN and for some reason, when it goes to sleep, new print jobs never wake it up. So when I print something and the printer is asleep, I have to toggle the on-off switch. This is the case with 2 computers that have used both Windows 7 and Windows 8; so I think this is a driver issue with the printer and not a Windows issue.

The 5450 is quiet and small. It's also much faster than my 1850, that just got real, real noisy. It prints 4 sheets of paper in duplex faster than the 1850 did 1 sheet duplex. Now if I can just find someone to keep me in toner. Even though I don't need the networking, it's a plus, in case I ever do.

Very slow getting replacement cartridges

It seems we go through the toner cartridge really fast even though we use the high yield TN 750. The stores here do not stock the toner cartridge and when we order them, they get put on back order. Very frustrating! We have had to divert printing to a different printer which is very inconvenient for those who use the Brother. Our Brother HL-5450DN has been sitting idle for a week and a half waiting for toner!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Printer

This printer is networked to two WIN7 computers via a wireless router which also has ethernet connections. One computer is connected to the router via wireless and the other is hardwired. The connection from the router to the printer is of course via ethernet cable. The setup was easy and straight forward. The printer is fast with good print quality. The duplex feature is especially nice.

Really like this printer. I feel it will be of great value in my Mobile Notary Public - Signing Agent business. Especially in printing both letter and legal size pages for document packages. It is part of the wireless network in my home which is a valued convienence.
