Build Complete

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The build took my 11 year old son and I about 4 hours to complete. Some of the steps were easier than others. One of the issues were in some of the pictures it was hard to determine which hole(s) the screws were supposed to go in due to the size of the illustration. Once we completed the build we downloaded the software on the computer. This was easily done and tool less than 5 minutes to get him up and running. It takes a little time to get used to the commands that he will respond too. After the slight learning curve my son has found this is a really fun interactive toy. We have the original robot and this is a improvement for sure. My son is very excited to keep updating the robot and gain additional levels. I would recommend this to any child but would caution this will take adult supervision to assemble and get running. We really like this has a rechargeable battery which makes it much cheaper to run for hours of entertainment. The position of the on/off button makes it easy to access. The display panel is another plus really like how it changes. Really like how the arm and other sensors will react when you touch them. He will come up with some really funs interactive sayings. Overall we are really happy with the new robot and look forward to many more hours of enjoyment.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I think that this Robot is super cool. It was just super hard to assemble. My 13 year old son, tried to assemble it by himself but he lost his patience after about an hour and 4 steps into it. So we turned to dad and he helped him put it together. My son is excited about it now and likes to keep updating it to gain additional levels. I would recommend this for children I just would warn you that it takes hours to put together with adult supervision. Once it is up and running it's hours of fun for the kids.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I think MAX is a neat little ( I was really expecting him to be bigger) robot. Other than his size my son and I was a little confused on what he does. I give it a 3 out 5 stars because my son lost interest in it with in a few days.

MAX A lot of fun but Complicated

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Our family has enjoyed Max. The kids 14, 12,9, have all enjoyed interacting with him. It is definitely a difficult build and 10 would be the minimum age I would recommend. There was definitely a lot of adult support needed and my 12 year old had some frustration but overall it was a fun project. I would definitely recommend this to friends and my kids already have.

Great for the right person

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] You will be doing some building with the Meccano M.A.X. It takes time a patience... especially if you are working with a younger child. My 11-year-old and I spent about five hours putting M.A.X. together, and about two hours before interest waned. If no breaks are taken, I estimate two and a half hours to complete assembly. Some of the parts are small, and other parts will fit in more than one place. There were a few changes that needed to be made, because parts were in the wrong place. M.A.X. has a cool factor, but not as cool as what you can do on a smartphone... according to my 11 and 13-year-old. It was not a longterm entertainment provider. I would recommend it to the right person... someone who enjoys putting things together and getting them to work.

Fun interactive STEM toy

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] MAX-Meccano is a fun, interactive robot that you get to build yourself. You can use an app on your smartphone to make MAX move around, grab items, and make a bunch of different sounds. You can also play games, check out some trivia, or even listen to jokes. If you don't have a smartphone or don't want your child to use yours, they can still use the controls directly on MAX. One of the things my 11 year old loves to do is use MAX to close the dog's kennel from afar!
MAX comes as a pile of parts that you need to put together with the enclosed tools. Directions are a bit vague, so some of the parts are trial and error. My 11 year old is constantly building things and made a valiant attempt at building MAX, but we ended up having to re-do a number of things. He spent several hours building it and we spent another hour or so tweaking.
I didn't give this 5 stars for a few reasons:
* Instructions are a bit vague, both for building and getting started with MAX.
* While MAX drives great on hard surfaces, he runs into trouble with carpeting.
* I am constantly hearing "my servo is stuck" and I can't figure out what the problem is. I'm guessing it is related to the carpeting, but it is really annoying.

Great Project To Do Together
on October 25, 2017

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My son is 11 years old and in 6th Grade, not an easy age. He is on the edge between being a kid playing with toys and being a tween doing more older kid activities. He is also active in sports and is always participating in a team of some sort. Those things being said, he is also at the point of really being interested in exploring new things that get his brain moving. I wasn't too sure about how he would react to the Meccano Max robot. I was pleasantly surprised at his excitement when the box arrived and he checked it out a bit. I was still a bit cautious about the age appropriateness of it, would it be way too easy and childlike leaving him bored or would it be just way over his head and ability leaving him discouraged? When we opened the box WOW that was a lot of parts and I felt kind of like "Oh No". When we opened the instruction book my thoughts were turned completely around. Talk about easy to understand. Each and every step is laid out so specifically and obviously with such concise pictures. Each phase of the robot neatly packaged in the separate bags. I wouldn't say it is easy but it is definitely not something to be intimidated by. He hasn't completed MAX yet because it is a project that he and his dad are doing together and they are taking their time. I am loving how they are talking about each phase and each group of pieces that they are assembling, how is this going to work ultimately? How will this contribute to the overall completed robot? They are both pretty mechanically minded and this has been an amazing project for them to do together because it isn't something that my husband already knows how to do. He isn't the most patient when teaching any kind of building skills so this is perfect because he is learning right along side his son. We absolutely LOVE this and I think I see more Meccano projects in our future. I am really so very glad that we were able to give this a try because I don't think that I would have purchased it on my own with so many of the questions I had before. These are great and we highly recommend the Meccano projects.

Great STEM toy, fun and has potential
on October 26, 2017

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I believe that the target age range for M.A.X should be around 14+. There were some parts in the instructions that were harder to understand or difficult to execute on the robot, that 10 year olds may not have enough patience to follow . Although there were some rough patches while putting M.A.X together, he was fun to play with and teach when he was fully built and his brain was finally uploaded.
After assemble, we had to take apart his motorized claw to realign it. When MAX would start for the first time, he goes through some sort of systems check. One of which is opening and closing the claw. He would close it and the motor would click loudly because it did not know it was closed. A simple fix, but something that shouldn’t have to be done.
While playing with M.A.X, there were times where he could not hear the instructions. Make sure to keep other noises at a minimum, like radios and TV’s.
One thing to add in the box, would be a list of his commands and what level of intelligence he has to be to perform the action. It was an interesting time trying to get him to a high enough level to play all of his games.
The packaging had no problems and was easy to open and unpack. Finding some pieces were hard because the bags were not labeled, but the pieces were organized very well in their respectable bags.
Things to know before I get this product?
M.A.X is an adorable robot who is fun to play with and interesting to talk to. When first starting out with M.A.X begin showing him objects and get to know his commands. Be patient while building the robot.
Positives
--Fun to interact with
--Progressive learning
--Cute and silly personality
--Can operate via phone app
--Well organized packaging
Negatives
--May be difficult for 10 -14 year old kids to put together alone. Will need adult help.
--Supplied tools are sub par for assembly, they could be better for the price.
--Extra time to figure out what words help him raise the intelligence level
--Bags for parts not labeled, made it difficult to find the right one
--Long wait for brain to be uploaded into robot
Final thoughts
MAX is nice toy with potential. We found play dropped off after MAX reached his highest level of intelligence. If the next version could incorporate WiFi or get to the net via the phone app, MAX could really expand it’s capabilities.
This is a great STEM type toy, it engages a person on different levels.
