[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I think this is a great toy!! My son loved building him and playing/interacting with Max. Max worked absolutely great for about 5 days and now is saying his ser pro is stuck. and only works intermittently.which frustrates my son. He still trys and plays with Max.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This guy is amazing. It is definitely overwhelming when you open the box and see all the parts and pieces. However, the instructions are laid out well. I do think this would be difficult for a child to do without a parent to help. My son lost interest after a while, but that occurs with Legos too (which he loves). Definitely a cool toy if you child is interested in tinkering or robotics.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My 12 year old son has been in the STEM program at school the past two years. He really enjoyed following the instructions and putting it together. I would recommend this for kids who like to follow instructions to build thinks, but would steer clear of this if your child likes to attempt to figure things out on their own. The parts are divided into small bags to help you only take out what you need as you need it. We found it to be very important to follow the instructions and open things as needed! There are over 400 pieces so keeping everything organized is helpful. Some parts are very small, so I recommend a workspace that is away from little kids. It took my son several hours over the course of a weekend to put this together. Truly I think my son enjoyed building it more than playing with the finished product- but he's proud to show off his accomplishment to friends and family. As a toy, it's probably more appropriate for a younger child, but it takes a older child or strong adult supervision to build it.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great set that makes kids use their brain. Putting it together took alot of time in order to get it right. But with perseverance and an end goal in mind it came out awesome! I would recommend this to anyne who have older children that are in to buildng and robotics. This is such fun to have, and learn all that it is capable of doing!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Wow! My son has been asking for a robot for over a year. When I had the opportunity to review this one, I jumped at the opportunity. My son wanted to put it together in his own, he is 11 and loves things like that. He had so much fun, and it didn’t take as long as I thought it would. My husband and I only helped a few times, otherwise, he did it himself. After he finished, he started interacting with MAX. I could hear him laughing for ages. I came in and asked what was so funny. He told me MAX was hilarious, and he was having so much fun. He was also able to play some STEM games on him and loved it! My son loves Math and science and MAX makes learning these things fun. Although we got this for free, I think I’d spend the money to buy it, my son loves it that much.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Had a blast with this guy! Lots of small parts to put together with my son which when he was done made it so much more entertaining. We created “Ted”’that’s what he named him. This little guy interacts & entertains us to no end. He evolves with his interactions. Most definitely recommend. Brought the family together to build then enjoy hours of entertainment! Cannot recommend enough

Construction not for the faint of heart

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I put this robot together with my 10 year old son. It took us 3 different sessions to build it. He lost interest at the beginning of the second session and I ended up finishing it. All of the tools necessary were included and we had all of the parts we needed. The pictures for construction were very clear and easy to follow. In some sections of the robot it required smaller hands to screw the pieces in, while at the same time requiring some dexterity so it is definitely a joint effort of child and adult.
Once the robot parts were connected, we then needed to connect the wires into the correct places. I inadvertently connected two of them in the wrong place. M.A.X. was able to tell me that they were not connected correctly which was very cool (and helpful).
Once it is built, it must charge for at least 6 hours before using for the first time, which was hard for my son to wait. Once it was charged, we connected it to the computer to do the software update. That was the end of the "easy" part.
While the building instructions were very clear, the directions fell short when it came to running the robot and caused me great frustration. I got confused with the directions for connecting it to my phone. There are a couple of different apps so be sure to select the Meccano app and not the Meccanoid builder app. I didn't remember seeing the direction that it needed a bluetooth connection; I thought it was a wifi connection. Once I figured that out, my phone wouldn't connect via bluetooth. I then downloaded the app to my son's phone and it connected immediately. My son especially enjoyed that M.A.X. can hold small objects and deliver them to someone else, which is all controlled via the app.
While you can control it via the app, you can also talk to it and interact with it via voice commands. Unfortunately, the microphone isn't very strong and our M.A.X. responds inconsistently to voice commands (no matter if it was me or my son). It was relatively easy to do the set up via voice commands but it has not consistently responded to voice commands since the initial set up. Thankfully, it is easily controlled via the phone and the controls are well explained.
My son has played with it for at least 6 hours. Approximately 4 times in those 6 hours, it gave an error message where M.A.X. says "My 'servo' is stuck" and we can't figure out how to fix it. It eventually seems to reset itself and continues to run.
In the directions at the end regarding running/interacting with the robot, multiple languages are presented in small print. Lack of detail in the instructions and so many languages in a small space made it very difficult to follow the steps to interact with it.
Overall, my son loves interacting with it and controlling it with the phone app. Now that is it all put together, it is a really cool toy. Just be prepared to hit up a search engine to figure out how to run it.

Better than Legos

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So up till now my son and I had only previously built LEGO sets together. Now Meccano Max is tougher than legos to put together but the build was fun, well directed, and created excitement that we would have a robot to play with when we were done. Some of the parts of the build were difficult but if it isn’t meant to fit together it will not which is great! I would say this is a medium difficulty build, getting some of the nuts into tight places was slightly difficult for adult hands to get to but they provide tools that help you get them in there. Once complete the robot was fun to play with and get to know, we had to do a software update that was easy to do by plugging into a computer with downloaded software. We said “hello” to start and Max went through a bunch of initial questions that it asked my son to get to know him. After that it took my son through a systems set up and test that checked to see if all of its parts were working correctly which they were. My son quickly got through the initial commands and started to learn the coding options! Too cool! I would recommend this product to friends with young kids 9-12. Prepare to help them build it and get started with it. After that Max kept my son interested and wanting to teach him more.
