Makes Spider-Verse sing

I was a projectionist in the seventies when I learned about JBL, a legendary brand. I know what movies should sound like; by now they nearly always sound better at home, with a JBL SUB 550 supporting my system. My modest cinema's oldest component, a dual 8 powered subwoofer I've relied upon since the early nineties, finally met its match failing to reproduce the LFE from the Spider-Verse. The sound of shredding cones is not pretty. The rest of my "temporary" 7.1 system had spent a few years in mothballs before dusting it off for this oddly-shaped room with built in alcoves in which a 55 inch 4K TV snugly fits, with room for a sub to the left. I have a JBL Northridge N-CENTER, and 3 pairs of JBL Control One speakers, powered by a Pioneer VSX-1020. Wider than it is long, with 12 feet from the front of the screen to sliding glass doors behind the futon, and an offset open space to the right, the only solution for surrounds in this room was mounting them on portable stands. Thanks to the March Madness sale, the competitively priced JBL SUB 550P amplified every "booj" musically, standing up handily to the challenge of the Spider-Verse's deep, pulsing, rapid beats and booms, without overpowering the smaller speakers and the space. I don't know if there is room for two floor standing speakers with a matching center, to bounce an Atmos pair off the ceiling for a 7.1.2 system. For now, this JBL SUB 550P ties the whole room together so well, it makes the smaller speakers feel full, fitting the space and placing the source of the sound with precision and clarity, reproducing more frequencies than my ears can detect.

What a joke

I tried 4 of these in every possible configuration using Audyssey XT32. Tested as single, double, triple, and all four. Corner placement, center of wall, front rear. They just suck the life out of a great sound system.

A lot of bottom end for the buck

I have been an avid fan of JBL for almost 40 years, but mainly from the pro side. I am putting together a new home theater and I needed to replace my 10 year old subs. I originally wanted a 15" sub with at least 300 watts but the price of the SUB 550P made it a no brainer, so I bought two to compensate for the smaller size. So far so good.

Big sound

I got this on a sale for cyber Monday and it is definitely worth the money it costs at normal price. It has deep lows and loud highs. Although when it is turned up there is a noticeable smell from the voice coil or amplifier, I don’t push it terribly hard but the amp on the back does get warm and puts off a smell. Overall a great product

Sounds and feels awesome!

I bought this last January and like is so much, I just bought another for my basement setup. No regrets whatsoever. Some local news stations have a very low background rumble, I don't know how many times I've gotten up to see if there was a delivery truck in the driveway. Well worth the price.
