I found my real family

The Story: I was told about being adopted when I was old enough to understand. I was given a children’s book that explained about adoption as soon as I could read. I understood that kid’s like me were usually the result of teenagers that made a “mistake” and other parents who weren’t lucky enough to have kids benefited. I had a sister, not my “real” sister but real to me. We played, we fought, we were family. When my sister got older she wondered more about who actually gave birth to her. I never did. We were a family like any other and who actually gave us up and why didn’t seem to matter.I was very happy not knowing anymore. End of that story. I thought it would be fun to take the “23and me” genetics test. I already know I’m carrying a mutant gene (that test was a little bit more money) but I thought it would be fun to see my genetic ancestry. And I wasn’t really sure where I came from and I could fact-check their health information because I all ready paid big bucks for the “real” tests. It took three weeks and I received about 50 pages of information concerning every aspect of my DNA. I’m British/Irish and German/French (96%) I’m really boring, geneticly, with very little of any other group in me. No health problems in their limited screening. I real didn’t think they would find my little gene problem (only nine people have been recorded, worldwide). But, when I looked at “DNA relatives”, at the top of the list with 50% of my DNA, was my brother. Not half-brother, full-blooded, brother. And this brother had two sisters and another brother. My birth parents had five kids, they only raised four. I’m 62, my sister is 60, her younger sister is 58, her oldest brother is 56 and baby brother is 54. They were never told about me and my adoption was closed of course so I never considered a real family existed. This isn’t a recommendation for online genetic testing but It changed my life. Life Changing Product

My mom is adopted and she was a single parent, so I literally had nothing to identify with. The only thing we knew for sure much later in life was that her bio-mom is jewish. 23andme was definitely something I've been waiting for in my life. Turns out I'm mostly English. It has helped me form part of my missing identity. It was really hard not being able to participate in "what is your heritage" conversations growing up that seem to happen so much during high school/college years.
Anyone searching to fill a missing void/identity in their life should definitely purchase this product. It is easy to use. You receive your results in a decent amount of time. 23andMe also continues to keep in contact with you via research, updates to the ancestry algorithm, etc.

Statin Sensitivity

23andme results indicated heightened risk of adverse reaction to statins except for simvastatin. I was able to take 80mg daily simvastatin with no problem. Was switched to liptor after mentioning my 23andme results to my doctor who ignored the warning. I was barely able to walk before I was finished with my first prescription. Doctor took me off liptor and suggested a more "mild" statin. Again, a reaction, being woke up with sever pain in my leg muscles and knee joint. I immediately refused any more statin. Still have not fully regained my strength after nearly 2 years.

Thanks for your feedback. Your Ancestry Composition is a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals, we are able to continually evolve and improve your results.
As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your Ancestry Composition. Connecting a biological parent or child to your own 23andMe profile will also allow your Ancestry Composition results to update and reflect this additional genetic information.

Important information Gathered

I bought my kit in 2008, when they had just started up. A family member was diagnosed with Hemochromatosis and I wanted to know if it was inherited and if I had the mutation for it. I do, and passed it on to my daughter. I also had my brother die from testicular cancer at 23 years old, and my nephew had just been diagnosed with the same at 24! I thought there had to be a genetic connection to the disease. I wanted to research to see if I could learn about which mutations were known tobe connected to testicular cancer.Sure enough! There are 8 known mutations for testicular cancer and my DNA had 7 of those 8. This could be life saving information for my sons. I told them to check often because it does run in the family. Knowledge really is power. You can change a lifestyle, eating habits, etc when you know that you may have a propensity for certain diseases or conditions. Thanks you so much 23andme, for creating an excellent & informative product & website.
