Surprises

While the experience is overall positive, be prepared for surprises. I discovered that my Dad is not my biological father. And I had to ask a cousin to participate to make sure that our DNA in fact, did not match. Now, I am searching for relatives to help me identify how my biological father might be--my mom has died, so I can't ask her. I am sure I"m not the only person to whom this has happened, but it does shake you

23 and me allow me to connect with a 2nd cousin that was given up for adoption. His father was a very promanent man in Louisiana, who happen to be my uncle. I have put together a family reunion in July. It is a very beautiful story, I would be willing to share in more detail, if you choose.

Fun, solid service with updates, not valuable yet

It might be worth the money at half off ($49/ancestry) and $100 health+ancestry. There's not much practical information so it's just kind of fun to compare DNA to family members and see your DNA odds of different traits vs whether you have them. It's interesting to know about Carrier Reports and Disease risk, but bc they are covering only a small % of genes which affect the condition, so I wouldn't say this service is clinically useful right now.

Mixed Feelings

I got the most expensive kit. I am some what disappointed in the results the lack of information and confirmation of the health portion, If I knew how little of the health information there would be I would have gotten the less expensive kit the Ancestry. They say they will update any further information but I am not sure they will without costing you additional money. Which I think they should update your information for free after you spent the amount of money I spent on this.

Not worth the cost

The user interface was great! Well displayed and explained material. Go team! Sadly, the results were very slow in coming and deadlines were communicated and not met. The email was automated and would say it will be 2-3 weeks and predict results 5 weeks later which of course is nonsensical. The lack of family connections I was given was disappointing. I am not that interested in a bunch of 4th cousins. I feel that 23 and Me is benefiting far more from my data and survey questions than I. I don’t appreciate having to continuing paying to maintain access. I also don’t appreciate not receiving compensation for my time in any form. Your clients should not be the only altruistic ones. I was also disappointed that part of my heritage was not reflected in the results at all. Family visited family overseas and so we know that some specifics were not even identified.

I have good genealogical data on my family that goes back into the 1600s, 23andMe's results were a very good match as to origin, appearance, and health. I also had sent in my wife's sample. Her results were a 99% match to those of her brother's that had been submitted under a different last name and residence. All in all, very good accuracy from such a small sample.

Disregard if you're adopted: it'd be great for you

Mine didn't really tell me anything new. 25% my DNA was under the vague category- Northwest European, ok. I could care less about the Neanderthal portion. If you know where your grandparents came from you probably won't learn anything new. English and Irish are combined and French and German are in same category. The tiny little sliver I got out of it is that I'm a tiny bit Finnish 4%. Not really worth the price. I'm sure this product will get better with time, but right now it's meh.

Thank you for your feedback. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide:
https://www.23andme.com/ancestry_composition_guide/

Your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.
