New update

The new algorithm updates are a bit drastic. My husband went from 14% french & german to 0% and not to mention these new updates are for newer customers only. The older "chips" dont get the upgrade. I like 23andme for the most part, but this kinda ridiculous.

Disappointing

The results were very general to the point of being useless. I was expecting a more detailed report than simply I am approximately 98% Middle Eastern and 2% Northern African.

Thank you for your feedback. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide:
https://www.23andme.com/ancestry_composition_guide/

Your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.

No longer does 23&me give you probabilities for Parkinsons Disease, diabetes, etc.
The results are mostly for your entertainment. And that will last about 60 seconds.

Thank you for your feedback. The 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service is the first and only genetic service available directly to you that includes reports that meet FDA standards. You now are able to receive 65+ reports on health, traits and ancestry instead of exclusively ancestry reports.

We are working hard to be able to add reports on genetic risk for various health conditions. At this time, we only provide the following reports: https://www.23andme.com/dna-health-ancestry/

23andMe will continue to seek FDA authorization to offer new reports.

So far I have found no real benefit to doing this. Perhaps when I am informed about the potential of diseases in my old age, then I will feel differently.

Ties that bind and other twisted tales

Sometimes what you experience because of a product is far more rewarding than what the product does. I my case I hoped to find my adopted mother which has not happened yet, however what has happened is far more strange in some ways and rewarding. I found two second cousins I never knew I had who grew up within blocks of where I did and yet I never knew them. They had relatives that gave children up for adoption so they convinced their mother into taking the test and we are just waiting to see what it shows. Their mother will be a first cousin and quite closely related I hope.
Now I had a third to fourth cousin who contacted me but first to make sure I wasn't someone strange asked a friend who knew me on Facebook if I was OK before contacting me. She told me this after we exchanged a few emails. That was when I told her that her friend (that she asked about me) had met me through my oldest son on Facebook. Now tell me it isn't a small world indeed!! Now we have become good friends and share a lot of interests in our hobbies, like art and computers.
None of any of this would have been possible without the DNA sharing application part of 23andMe. Also it was very interesting to see where the DNA breakdown is since my background is all a mystery to me. It isn't all just about the testing it's also about the sharing without that the test is just a bunch of fancy numbers on paper!!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Surprise

The lore passed down through 5 generations was that our great grand mother was Native American and a princess no less. We have zero Native American genes. The bigger surprise is that my 1/2 sister is really my full sister. My father boasted of a pure nationality, oops that is not true either. Now waiting for two secret siblings to appear. Most interesting is that we take 50% from each parent but not exactly the same genes as our siblings. My child took the test and I am still laughing the father was 12% of his strongest prejudice. Four from my family have participated and we are all delighted with the treasures we found and the clear explanations and education we have gleaned from this experience. . Life is interesting and entertaining so are our 23&me DNA results.

My husband purchased the kit for me because my fraternal twin & I were adopted at birth & had no knowledge of our genetic makeup. I am now so thankful he did! Not only do we now know our makeup but also found our biological father & 3 half siblings!!! Thank you 23andme for this amazing discovery!!!
