Don't take it if your of African decent.

Vague ancestry results with utter unimportant generic details. I hate that this was a Christmas gift because it feels like a complete waste of money.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

East African, Central and South African and broadly Sub-Saharan African populations.
Keep in mind that your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.
We have launched the African Genetics Project to help advance our research on African ancestry. Our aim is to help people make new discoveries about their African identity by way of their DNA.

The information is extremely hard to understand and the format in which you go give the information isn't helpful. For $200 I expected more. I won't be recommending this to anyone.

Not worth the money

You really don't get much for the money. All the extra reports don't say much or they are difficult to understand. I do not recommend.

Found my father's biological family!

I received this as a Christmas gift from my mom because she knew I wanted to learn more about my ancestry since my dad is adopted and we know very little about his biological family. I just received the results a few weeks ago and the most surprising thing was the potential ancestors. Someone was listed as sharing 12% of my DNA and one of the surnames was consistent with my dad's biological mother. I reached out and it turned out to be my great uncle--his sister was my dad's biological mother!! My dad is 50 years old and is now in touch with his biological family. Best present ever!!

Very vague

My results made me think that all they really could tell is that I was European. Categories like "Eastern European" or "broadly European" are very vague and I was expecting to get the countries at least narrowed down; instead it just confirmed that I was a white guy.

I asked for a 23andMe kit for christmas because I was very curious about my ancestry. I am very glad that I received it because it has given me information about my ancestry that I would have never known about. I was definitely shocked to see my results, but in a good way. I learned so much about my ancestry and that I have some very unique results. My family members and fianće were very excited to see my results as well and they were just as intrigued as I was! I am very pleased with my experience with 23andme.com.

My new path to Ireland...

All my 45 years I've thought I was Hungarian/Italian and focused my energy on the ancestry of those places/people. My grandfather on my dad's side I am sure was Native Indian, so I expected to see a nice piece of that in me. I waited exactly 7 weeks for my report. 23andMe kept me updated with their progress knowing how anxious I was to see where all MY pieces come from! To my surprise, the very first thing I saw was that majority of MY makeup is 37% BRITISH/IRISH!! My grandma on my mom's side always told me that, but I assumed I was more like my dad, whose ancesters all came over from Hungary. So imagine how dhocked I am to find out the news that I only have 2% Hungarian and even less than that of Italian decent. I must express my disappointment in now knowing I have 0% Native Indian. But, I am excited snd ecstatic to learn that I can now celebrate my new found Irish decent and start researching in the right direction as to where my pieces now come from. What a wonderful journey this has been and I look forward to moving ahead and taking my ancestry adventure to the next level. :) My sister just now text me that she ordered hers. I'm so excited for her!

Easy to understand and very thorough

My husband purchased a test for himself about four months ago - I had no interest, believing my parents knew what they were talking about when they spoke about our Native American and German heritage. But when my husbands results came in and all the information it contained I felt a strong desire to have my DNA test done. So I did- my results BLEW me away. Nothing what I was told as a child. Could not have been better. Literally has changed my life, the way I think and look at things. I now will continue to research my true heritage.
I have purchased several of the tests for family members and a few friends. I HIGHLY recommend. 23andME!
