A little screwy

My cousin and I have the exact bloodlines but it will say he has a 5th cousin but it is a 3rd to me, things like that. Since we both have the same set of grandparents, everything should match. This is far from an exact science.

Found my birth Father and family

I received my 23andMe results a year ago in search of family, especially from my paternal side. I was adopted and never met my birth father. Matches popped up from everywhere. They started as distant cousins; matching around 1% or less. As time passed, the matches started getting closer. 3rd cousins and 2nd cousins. I reached out to those closer matches to help me find my father, with only his first name to go by; Carlos. That's it. I ended up meeting a distant cousin on my mother's side as well, and was delighted at all the genealogy he gave me, which went back to 1735 and our first immigrant ancestor arriving in Charleston, SC as an indentured servant. But my focus was always on finding my father. Was he still alive? Did I have brothers and/or sisters? Late last year, the pieces started falling into place. I met a first cousin and it looked like I had finally found the final link. He thought he remembered having an uncle named Carlos and started asking around within his family. Sure enough, in January, I was introduced to my half sister online. I discovered I had 2 more half sisters and a half brother as well! I also was told my father had passed away in 1992. While I knew that was a good possibility, it was still hard news to take. And no one seemed to be able to find a picture of him. So I chatted and connected with my new family and waited. Yesterday (4/1/19), after 19,205 days, someone found a photo and I saw my father for the very first time. I started shaking and came pretty close to hyperventilating; I saw MY face in the photograph! I hadn't been prepared to look so much like him. A cousin said I was the only one who looked like him. I have been urging everyone I know to get their DNA tested. Thank you, 23and ME!

I purchased the DNA test for my sister and I at Christmas. We hoped to find our half siblings. I am happy to report, a Nephew was linked to us. Through him we were able to connect with our half siblings. So excited.

A New Sibling Found

When I sent in my sample the most I was hoping for was to confirm family lore about being Native American. (Spoiler alert I found South Asian) What I found instead was a brother! Yes, this is life changing information and it is awesome. My father didn’t even know. My brother was given up for adoption at birth and submitted his DNA hoping to find his birth family. Well boy did he. When we talked we found out that we had lived in the same town for years (we moved there when I was 9 but he was born there so it was pretty random.) he and my dad live close to each other and he has fit in nicely with the rest of us. I am so happy that I did 23 and Me. I feel so lucky to have found my families missing piece!

My wife and I both wanted to trace our roots and have had some surprises so far. I am finding out that the family trees are close as far as ancestry, but there have been some surprises.

Found my long lost Sephardic cousins
on April 9, 2019

Length of ownership:1 year or longer
It’s been a year since I met my Sephardic cousins in Atlanta. My grandmother was first cousins with their (Sara and Jo Ann) mother. Our family immigrated from Izmir, Turkey and lived in the same apartment building in the Bronx. My cousins’ mother (Leah) used to take my aunt Estelle to the movies. My grandmother Rachel also was very close to their mother.
When Leah moved to ATL, they lost contact because this was the 30s maybe 40s. There’s a generation gap between my father an I, which is why I’m so closely related to Leah’s kids.
Since meeting my cousins, I’ve gained both family and even photographs- including my grandparents wedding photo. I now know what my grandfather Samuel looked like.
I couldn’t imagine life without my cousins. They are the support system I always needed. It was as if we were never apart and had known each other for years. It’s still weird having cousins, because I grew up as an only child with no cousins. But- not complaining. If it weren’t for 23andme I’d be alone without any cousins.
