Family History

I purchased 23 & me over a year ago. I wanted to see if the information I had gotten from my grandpa was accurate. My results showed exactly what my grandpa had told me years ago. 23 & me matched me to my sister and my dad. It also matched me to a niece that I did not know! We have met a few times since. She is adopted and wanted to know about her birth family. I highly recommend 23 &me.

I found more than I anticipated

I'm adopted and while I never had a burning need to search for my bio family, I was curious about my roots. I quickly found second cousins through 23 and me and we connected to share family trees and info. This eventually led to discovering my bio dad and shortly after (through cross referencing other sites) my bio mom and 2 half sisters. Crazy! The dna doesn't lie.

I was a foundling and I found my family

I bought the Ancestry service because I hoped to find my family. I was a foundling and have never known where I fit in the human family tree. Through my DNA matches, I was able to find my parents, siblings, and many extended family. Thank-you 23andMe for helping me find my roots and my family.

Found a Sister I didn't know about. 52 years!

I am a recent 23andMe user. I gave 23andMe to my daughter for Christmas 2016. Her results came back there was a connection to someone in Vietnam. We are of mixed Vietnamese and American parents. My father was in the Army and my Mom was a Vietnamese national. They were married for 25 years. This lead me to getting my own sample kit to verify if this person could be related to me. Come to find out she IS! Here is the background:
My mom was a young Vietnamese woman during the Vietnam war. Not making the best of decisions she had a relationship with a married American man which produced a baby girl. He was of no support to her and she struggled to support her new daughter. After a few months, she realized that the best chance for her daughter to survive and thrive she surrendered her to an orphanage ran by French nuns. She has explained to me that it was the hardest thing for her to do. She has told me that not a day has gone by that she didn’t think about her.
During April 1975, there was a big push to move American/Vietnamese babies to other countries for their safety. It was called Operation Babylift. Unfortunately, one of the planes had crashed killing 78 children. My mom was told that her daughter was killed in that crash. She gave up hope thinking that she would never see her again.
Fast forward to Sunday April 30th. I received my results and when I opened my connections there she was! The same lady that connected to my daughter. She was a match for “Half Sister” I reached out to her and offered to call her. After hearing her story and understanding what limited history I know for my mom, I was sure it was a match.
I went home that evening and told my mom of the news. She did not believe me at first, but when I told her that it was a DNA match she started to cry. She wanted nothing more than for it to be true. I told her that we would Facetime my sister after dinner. I have never seen my mom so nervous. I talked to my sister first to ease them in to it. What happened next was overwhelming.
I passed the iPad to my mom and there was silence for a good 30 seconds. My mom exploded with emotions and started to cry and apologize for not being around for 52 years. The next hour was spent speaking Vietnamese and crying. I don’t understand what was said, but I could tell that there were smiles and laughing towards the end. They were comparing facial features among other things.
I am flying our mom out to meet face to face next week May 10th.
I cannot thank you enough for the work that you do. You have made an old Vietnamese woman find closure to something that was eating at her throughout her life. I hope that others use 23anMe and find that missing connection that they are looking for.
