I purchased the 23 and me kit because my grandmother was adopted. My mom did hers with another company I did mine with you. My dad is dead so, I could not do his paternal line. But, when I got my results all my dad's people popped up on my 23 and me as relatives. Which they are. But I thought since you can only do maternal from mother to daughter, how did they get on here just curious. Now, I know way way back in the day, my parents shared some common ancestors. But the strange part is nobody seems to be related to my grandmother on here. Or if they are, they are not responding back to me when I'm reaching out. So I'm very confused.

Stunning Results

I received an email from a potential relative whose Grandmother was my grandfather’s younger sister. While we have not met, I was able to tell him where he grew up and where that was in relation to where I grew up. This was simply stunning.

Your service found my half sister, a piece of me, and someone my mother and I had been looking for for years. Talking to my sister is like talking to myself as we are so eerily similar. What makes me even happier is knowing my mother sleeps well at night knowing the daughter she had to give up for adoption when she was 17 turned out to be an absolutely amazing person. We all talk constantly and are excited to meet soon! From the bottom of my heart, thank you 23andMe.

I have been very happy with the quality of my results. I purchased the health & ancestry kit back in 2013 before the FDA started regulating the health interpretations. Since then, they have taken away the ability to upgrade your chip version (which allows you to update your results) and I have about half of the health data available to my mother and grandmother who have also sent in their kits. Also, I purchased my kit as a freshman in college, so it kind of sucks that they JUST came out with an education discount.
The ancestry results are of pretty good quality, but they lack a good genealogy (family tree) database program to organize your results. Despite this, I would still recommend 23andMe above any other genetic testing kit.

The DNA23 kit was a gift from my daughter with whom I share a passion for genealogy and all things "old" with a connection to family.
My search is my way of honoring the people in my past family and gifting my present family.

Connections

I am making connections with family members I have never met but knew had to be out there. I am especially excited that even though I am African American, I am sharing connections with the European half of my family, because more dots in my family history can be filled in. This is exciting because I have been handed the torch from my late uncle who used to travel to libraries to get information on our family, and now with the DNA results...BAM! I hope that more of my genetic/family members agree to share. Shows you how small the world is and how backwards feelings about racial differences can be. DNA testing from 23andMe is like, a final sigh. I see it as a cleansing and an affirmation that unites not divides us. You need to add tools for sharing photos and other data.
