I got this kit in order to learn more about my ancestry. I ended up learning more about my ancestry as well as my health. This kit changed my lifestyle into a healthier more beneficial routine. I learned so much about myself and would recommend everyone have this experience.

Probing the past and the inheritance

I have been utterly fascinated with data from 23andme. The results of the genetic disease markers has been very important to me, and the DNA matches have re-connected me to a cousin I haven't seen in half a century, and many others.

I submitted my test kit aver a year ago. It was very easy to do with simple easy to understand instructions. I have reviewed the health reports many times as there is so much info to absorb. I find it all very interesting, especially the neaderthal and heritage reports. I am so glad I bought this kit. I will be buying it for my family members as gifts because I am very curious about the possible similarities that may exist.

I know my family, my blood but did this and think it's pretty much bogus. My grandfather on my fathers side was 100% full blooded Italian. My DNA can up as 1.8% Italian. They got my moms side a little better as I knew I was German and British but had no idea I was 53% Irish? I don't really believe that part. LOL. My last name was Boiani on my fathers side. Kind of disappointed. All these cousins I never heard of!! NONE that are my "real" cousins came up. LOL
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for your feedback. Our Ancestry Composition report assigns results based on your genetic similarity to our 31 populations worldwide. These populations refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. If you do not see ancestry that you expected, this is because you more closely resembled our other reference populations genetically. Keep in mind that you randomly inherit 50% of your DNA from each of your parents. For this reason, your ancestry assignments may vary depending on which DNA segments you inherited from each parent.

DNA Relatives locates other 23andMe members that match your DNA and predicts a relationship using the number of segments and the percent DNA shared. When two people share identical segments of DNA, this indicates that they share a recent common ancestor. This tool will be able to identify matches that are related to you both maternally and paternally within the last five to ten generations.
Many of your relatives will be more distantly related. Keep in mind that only relatives that have participated in the 23andMe Service and have opted into the DNA Relatives tool will be visible in your list of matches.

I can say that 23 and me exceeded my expectations and are not just about where your ancestors came from. They are doing ongoing research and investigation into genetic markers and their connection to diseases and other related ties. I would encourage everyone to participate in their research.
