confusing

My DNA result changed couple times since the first result which is very confusing.
Mongolia and Manchuria should NOT be in same category.
Its completely different according to the history. Hope more people will send their samples and help you find out more about Mongolian Genetics.

10 yrs ago I got a DNA test from Family Tree DNA and boy somebody got it wrong. Family Tree did mine twice because I complained that I Puerto Rican, and they had all this British , Irish , Anasazi on my Y DNA . Anyway you got the opposite. Who's wrong, you or them?

Thanks for your feedback. It is not uncommon to receive varying results between different ancestry analyses. Different companies can utilize reference data from varying sources. For example, 23andMe uses reference individuals from within our customer base to help define the reference populations used in Ancestry Composition. You are able to view the data sources for Ancestry Composition by clicking on the population and selecting Show Details.

Unlike other genetic genealogy services that identify relationships on only the direct paternal or maternal lines, DNA Relatives can identify relationships on any branch of your family tree. It does this by taking advantage of the autosomal chromosomes—the 22 chromosomes that are passed down from your ancestors on both sides of your family.

Keep in mind that the number of relatives will vary for each person and will grow over time as more people join 23andMe.

Caveats on Results

I understand the extensiveness of mutations for some diseases and how difficult it is to convey this to clients. Nonetheless upon finding that I was able to query my genotyping, I proceeded to try and look up several rs numbers that have been reported to be associated with auto immune disease, specifically lupus. In doing so I found that the coding for the snps was wrong. I received no answer to a question. As a genetic scientist I found this grossly unsatisfactory.
I'm also a little concerned with the false reassurance that a negative test may give people bad info for extremely important mutations like the BRCA. While it is noted on here, I strongly urge people with health concerns to have clinical testing with a clinical geneticist as lab testing is quite different. Do not be falsely reassured if you have a negative test on something that is important in your family.
In addition the ancestry data is not congruent at all with what I've gotten from decodeme in the past. It is also not congruent with what I know to be my family geneology within the last 250 years. So there are caveats here too. I think 23 and me doesn't astoundingly good job but there are bound to be errors.
Do not expect it to be perfect and do not rely on anything as a test for something serious that you're concerned about. It's a good screening tool but far from ideal. They have done their homework done just about as well as anybody could do with consumer mass genotyping.
I hope you also understand that this massive data is worth it's weight in gold to them and that the company is using it with private industry to generate possible revenue generating licenses and solutions to various health problems. This is where they make their dollars and this is why your answers to questions accurately on the research page are extremely important. I do not think they are collecting the data from you for the sole purposes of giving you information for a small amount of money you pay. This large database their primary reason for existence. Just be aware that there's a profit motive involved here and it may be working to your benefit in the long run. Government research is extremely slow and poorly funded.
So give 23 and me a chance. They do very well considering the complexity, about is good as it can get. Just know that you were dealing with a for-profit company and the results are not 100% perfect. In my opinion no one else does it better though.

Disappointment

Inadequate information. Difficult, if not impossible, to have an easy meaningful conversation with potential relatives. No possibility of sharing ancestor photos. Not enough regions. Waste of money if you have done even a minimum search. I've learned more from free sites than from this 'so called' service.

Thanks for your feedback. We have implemented an ongoing quality review process and are actively taking steps to improve usability and customer satisfaction.

Please keep in mind that your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.

Also, please note that DNA Relatives locates other 23andMe members that match your DNA. This feature is just one of our many features, and it is important to keep in mind that our customers use our service for a variety of reasons. We are unable to determine if or when other 23andMe customers will respond to your sharing invitations or messages. We leave the option of responding to DNA Relatives introductions solely to the customer.

Maternal & Paternal

It would be much easier for those of us that seek to find one side of our family or the other to have 23andme divide relatives accordingly. I have to go into each relative to see if that person is a paternal or maternal relative.
