Fascinating results - not great for genealogy

I love the focus on research, but it seems to exist somewhat at the expense of good genealogy features.

Bad for south asians

The ancestry service is a total waste of money if you're not white.
Since I come from a country that is home to dozens of different ethnic groups, I was hoping 23andme could tell me about my ethnic history. But the 23andme report identified my heritage as broadly from a continent--not even a country breakdown! Useless.

Thank you for your feedback. Our Ancestry Composition report assigns results based on your genetic similarity to our 31 populations worldwide. These populations refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities.
In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

Your Ancestry Composition is a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals, we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your Ancestry Composition.

I bought 3 ancestry kits during 23andMe's Thanksgiving sale, one for myself and each of my parents and am very satisfied with my purchase. Although I wasn't surprised by the results, I love finally knowing for sure what my ethnicity is. Testing my parents improved the accuracy of my results because of a process called "genetic phasing", which, to my knowledge, other DNA testing companies do not provide.
I would definitely recommend 23andMe's ancestry DNA tests to friends and family.

Overwhelmed

I knew I was adopted at an early age, I was told I had other siblings from my birth mother. After I received my results i found not only my birth mothers children (my siblings but I also discovered my birth Fathers children. I have 10 new siblings. I have discovered that these 2 separate families (mothers children and fathers children) grew up together and did not know that they had a sibling (me) out there. They have remained friends for over 50 years and they have now found out they have a sibling in common. I plan on meeting my family soon. I love 23andMe!

how does it compare to other DNA testing?

I am happy to have done the test here. the results are slightly different from the other company I had previously done. I am disappointed with connecting with others that you match some dna with. but this is also the case with the other company I had used. which is disappointing. People must not feel comfortable in this day and age.

I find the interface of 23andMe unclear. Somewhat interesting results but very little instruction regarding how to use effectively.
