Who am I

My father’s parents were full blooded German. Plys my mother had little in her too. Thus, I was expecting to be the lion’s share of German when I recevied my results. To my surprise I was also halh Italian and very little German. At the age of 52, I found out I had a different father than my siblings. Finally, with very little infomation, a lot of resistance from my mother and 23andMe, not only did I find my biological father but also my half sister. 23andMe truely changed my life.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Adoptee Grateful to 23andme

I am an adoptee, and really never held out much hope for finding my birth parents. My adoptive parents were awesome, but there was always the questions I had: What nationality was I? Did I have any genetic dispositions to diseases that I should watch out for? Could I have any other siblings?
At a conference with others from across my company, dinner conversation turned to the inevitable “what nationality are you?” I did my usual and asked the table to guess! One of the other attendees said that she had just done this “new” service called 23andme, and that I really should do it. And so, I went home and researched the company and product, and ordered a kit! A few weeks later the kit came, and after another few weeks, I was notified that my results were ready!
With trepidation, I opened up the results.... To my surprise, I found that I was half English/Irish/French and half Italian/Greek. To my relief, these two must have come from sturdy stock, as I was not prone to any diseases! Whew! I don’t know why this was surprising to me. I was raised by English/Welsh parents (quiet folks), with this loud, expressive, hand-waving daughter!
I looked through the results for genetic relatives, and the closest were 2nd-4th cousins, and I could not tell anything except that they were certainly divided into two camps —- English and Italian. A few months later, I get a notification —- a half-sibling was found. Given that I was born in Pennsylvania, and moved to California, then Georgia, I figured the half-sibling would be from Pennsylvania, and to my surprise, she lived less than a mile from me in Georgia! That weekend, we met —- two “only children” of deceased adoptive parents now had family! We bonded immediately. Together, we intensified our searches, comparing notes, etc. Given that we had different maternal haplogroups, we knew that we shared a father. Who was he? Were there more of us?
After a few more months passed, I got another ”close family” hit — a first cousin. This time, it was a match on the English side. I knew more about the circumstances of my birth mother, including her age when I was born, so it only took a few days to determine that his father’s sister was actually my birth mother. Wow, I wrote a letter for him to give to her, and ask if she wanted to meet me. Well, unfortunately, she did not want to meet me. Actually, wha she said was that she would have to think about it.... My cousin shared that the time tha I was born was a very dark time for the family, and very little was said about it even to this day. Hmmm, what could have happened? I did more research and found that her parents were divorced a few years before, and she was entering high school and taking care of her younger brother. She later married (over ten years later), and had one son. Pictures of the family that my cousin shared showed a happy family, so I am so glad that things worked out well for her. Maybe, she will change her mind about meeting me.
Fast forward another few years...and my half-sister and I received a match for a second cousin on our father’s side. That was as close as we had come, so we are excited! Both she and I write to our new second cousin in hopes that she will respond! Excitement —- she responds and shares information about herself...and she is from my hometown! Based on my knowledge of genetic relatives, my prediction was my father was her grandmother’s male sibling. The only problem was, there were no male siblings! The only was to go was “up”...could her great-grandfather be our father? We decided to test er grandmother to see...if she turned out to be a half-sibling, our question would be answered! A few months later, we got our answer —- her great-grandfather was our birth father! And, he was significantly older than my birth mother! Her grandmother called me and we had a chance to meet and discuss her father. Circumstances looked good —- he was a very handsome, very charismatic, owner of an all-night diner (with an attached motel!). But I also learned that he was a marvelous father and grandfather. Whatever other “issues” he had, he was deeply loved by his family. Since then, my half-sister and I have had a chance to meet our very large Italian family. They have been so loving, and accepting of us!
Other half-siblings have been found along the way as well, including a half-brother, who we went to meet in Florida. It has been an awesome experience, and I will be forever grateful to 23andme for making this possible.

That was it? I was surprised at how little information I received for my 200 bucks. I'm glad to know that I am a whitish European looking guy. I see that every morning in the mirror, but now I know for SURE that I am a whitish European looking guy. I understand Mendelian genetics. You can't TELL me my phenotype. You can only give me the likelihood. I went to grad school for biotech and I design lab equipment for a living.
I only expected way more information.

The test results are extremely vague and uninformative. Not worth the spit and money.

Total Disappointment, Waste of Money

My mom purchased this for me as a gift and I actually feel terrible that she wasted SO much money. The process to get started and send the sample was simple, I was excited to see my results. Unfortunately the reports provided are completely useless, 95% of them provide no information, the rest provide useless information. Really was hoping for details other than what type of earwax I'm prone too and which fingers are likely to be longer than the others. I'm 80% Eastern European - tell me something I didn't already know!!! The lengthy questionnaire I completed in the beginning basically was repeated back to me in the results. None of the report provided details specific to me, it's all so generic I feel like the reports could belong to anyone, there's no indication they were created for me. Truly was disappointed when my reports came and feel like my mom wasted her money and I wasted my time.

Thank you for your feedback. While there is a short ethnicity questionnaire that is associated with your profile information, these answers are not used to generate your ancestry results.

The data that we report is strictly genetic information regarding your genotype (e.g. the A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s at particular locations in your genome), generated through processing of your saliva by 23andMe. Participation in surveys is completely voluntary. Choosing not to participate will not affect your genetic data.

Keep in mind that each health, trait and wellness report includes a Scientific Details tab that includes more detailed information.

An Unexpected Twist

I was adopted into my family, so I had no idea what my genetic history was. I originally submitted a test kit to find out if I had any potential genetic problems and to see if I was right about my background. Turns out I mostly was, but that wasn't the twist.
The twist happened last week. Another 23andMe user shared his test results with me; turns out we're probable half brothers. Over the weekend we shared a bit of information and now I've got a pretty good idea of who my biological father was, and he (and his family) were surprised by my existence. And the information I've found out so far has gone a long way to help me look up my biological mother.
I've always known who I am, but 23andMe has helped me find out where I came from. And I've got more exploring to do....

Excellent for family genealogists

The health features are very nice, but I've benefitted the most from the ancestry reports. I've looked for ancestors from various regions for the past 20+ years and hadn't been able to find the ones I was looking for. My ancestry report confirmed that I have no Native American history (which I had strongly begun to suspect) and that I do have Jewish ancestry (which I'd already determined). I could have saved a lot of time if I had this product 20 years ago.
