I've been on a couple of years and I have had poor response from my matches. I joined to try to find my mother's birth mother but it's been difficult because of the poor response from other members to my queries. I've had better responses from matches on ancestry and FTDNA; that's not your fault but the matches but if 23andme had been my first DNA study it would likely have been my last. I've tested at six different sites.

I bought this test for my immediate family and am slowly getting more and more of them tested as I can talk them into it and afford it. It is amazing to see how people are related and it is nice to be able to pass down genetic information about ancestors who are no longer with us to my kids and their kids so they can feel more connected to those who can before them. The health information is very neat and the traits are fun to look at and compare with real life.

I got this for myself to just see what I am made of. 23&Me changed my life. I found out who my father was and found FOUR siblings thanks to 23&me. I highly recommend everyone get your DNA test and then dig into your history!

Did Not Answer My Questions About My DNA Make Up

I like the carrier status reports of the test. The Traits Report were a hit and miss for me. For example one of my traits says "Likely no dimples", I have very pronounced dimples. Another "Likely light hair", before I turned grey I had very dark hair. As for the Ancestry Composition, I am VERY disappointed. It's not nearly detailed enough. I have always known I am European (99.9% according to this report). So to just tell me the regions (which are very broad) doesn't help me. For example, I am 25.7% French and German. So what percent is French and what percent is German? One of my Grandfathers came to the US from the Netherlands. So is that the Broadly Northwestern European (17.6%) part of my DNA? My other grandparents were Polish. I wanted to know what part I was Dutch vs Polish. This report did not do that.

Thank you for your feedback. Trait reports can be a fun way to learn how your genetics influence such things as the color of your eyes, whether you’ve got dimples, and if you have a sweet tooth. But when designing these reports, we also wanted to illustrate that it’s not just your genetics that determines these traits, but other factors as well. What’s also useful about these reports is that they can tell you how similar or unique you are when compared to the rest of 23andMe’s customers.
The concept behind how we report the Trait results is fairly simple. Each report is based on specific genetic markers associated with that particular trait. Customers can read more about how we determine which markers to use in the Scientific Details tab on each report.
The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.
You can read about the population selection process in more detail in our Ancestry Composition Guide: https://www.23andme.com/ancestry-composition-guide/

I bought the product, partially, to make contact with related individuals. Unfortunately very, very, very few individuals respond to inquiries. Also it would be desirable to see when a person signed in last. There are some participants that never sign in. I miss the map with the geographic distribution of related individuals.

Looking at my 23 & me DNA and Health results is both interesting and informative. I enjoy comparing results with family members and have connected with DNA relatives. I look forward to 23 & me having greater access to Native American DNA and medical studies like BRCA 2.

I enjoyed learning about my DNA and how it affects my health and actions. I do like the feed-back as I learn how DNA works. This was especially interesting as my two daughters and their mother also took the DNA health portion. There were traits and diseases inherited, such as Renaud's. I am pleased and look forward to new knowledge from my time answering your questions. My daughter and I share in our genealogy searches and databases and we have found many unknown second, third, fourth, and distant cousins. We have learned much about DNA and relationships.
Just so you know, I answered the sleep questions truthfully but I do have sleep apnea and have utilized a C-pap machine for over 10 years. Knowledge of this may affect that survey. The question of C-pap machine was not asked.

By answering so many questions I also learned a lot about myself. I had polio as a teenager and now have post-polio syndrome. It was difficult to answer some questions since mobility is an issue and polio was never mentioned.
