Disappointed

My wife's grandfather on her Mothers' side was pure Shawnee from Ky.
But you show my wife's DNA as less than 0.1% Native American. How can that be?
Response from 23andme.comBy Customer CareApril 5, 2017
Thank you for your feedback. Evidence of your ancestors' DNA can be lost over time, and it may not be revealed in testing such as ours. Genetic genealogy services such as 23andMe cannot identify specific locations (cities, towns, or villages) or specific lineages (tribes or clans) that an individual may be descended from as this level of detail is difficult to distinguish based solely on DNA.

For more information on our existing reference populations, please visit the following help article: https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/202906830-Reference-populations-in-Ancestry-Composition

Currently 23andMe has several features that can reveal genetic evidence of Native American ancestry, although they are not considered a confirmatory test or proof of such ancestry in a legal context.

23andMe was recently granted authorization to offer genetic health risk reports to our US customers, including a report Parkinson's Disease. For more information, check out our blog: https://blog.23andme.com/news/good-news-about-health-reports/

We will release the first set of new genetic health risk reports in April, with additional reports to follow. However, we are not able to speculate about other changes to reports, or what may be available in the future, given our dialogue with the FDA is ongoing.

Found my family!

My dad was adopted in 1959, and we've spent nearly 30 years looking for his family. Thanks to 23andme, I was able to have my DNA matched to a first cousin, on his side, who had also submitted his DNA. After 30 years, we FINALLY found my dad's biological family. They're being reunited in the next few days. I'm still in complete shock. Thank you!

Both my parents are from the Philippines. Failed to provide any specific and accurate data on my ethnicity or the aproximate area of my ancestry on the heat map. I received my results only after I filled out a survey that indicated I was of Philippine decent. Very disappointing and unsatisfactory.

Thank you for your feedback. Our Ancestry Composition report will tell you what percent of your DNA comes from each of 31 populations worldwide. The analysis includes DNA you received from all of your ancestors, on both sides of your family. The results reflect where your ancestors lived 500 years ago, before the advent of intercontinental travel.

For a complete list of our 31 reference populations, visit: https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/articles/212169298

Unlike your Ancestry Composition report, your haplogroup assignments account for a very small fraction of your overall ancestry along a single line of your maternal and/or paternal lineages. If your mother’s mother’s mother was Asian, for example, and the rest of your ancestors were European, you would have high similarity to European populations but an Asian mitochondrial haplogroup.

While there is a short ethnicity questionnaire that is associated with your profile information, these answers are not used to generate your ancestry results. The data that we report is strictly genetic information regarding your genotype (e.g. the A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s at particular locations in your genome), generated through processing of your saliva by 23andMe.

I know that I am 50% Scandinavian, but my report only came up 27% Scandinavian. I was mainly looking for my paternal heritage, but how can I trust the results based on my maternal results?

Ancestry Composition may indicate that you inherited ancestry from your parent that is not visible in your parent's Ancestry Composition. Keep in mind that children receive a high-quality phasing which usually translates into assignments to finer-resolution populations such as more "Scandinavian" and less "Northern European.” Phasing refers to knowing which markers are on the same chromosome and is just one step in calculating your Ancestry Composition results.

You can learn more about this feature in the Ancestry Composition guide: https://www.23andme.com/ancestry_composition_guide/

DNA that you inherit from both parents is called autosomal DNA. As you inherit approximately half of this type of DNA from each parent, it is reflective of recent ancestry from both sides of your family tree. The vast majority of our features, including Ancestry Composition and DNA Relatives, are based on autosomal DNA.
