In a word...fascinating!

I'm Finnish...who knew!?!? I've wanted to do this for years and have always put it on the back burner. I knew I didn't have results back yet, but that didn't stop me from logging in a few times a week to be sure. I answered all the questions, and poured over all of the pre-result info I could access. And then...results day! I've known myself for 35+ years - and I know my health and ancestry pretty well - but I was still amazed at the results. They were as expected, nothing from left field, but it confirmed several rumors and introduced me to my Finnish ethnicity. And this is just the beginning of my journey. Now we await my father's results! So stoked to be a part of this!

If like me you are a celt, you will not get a detailed breakdown of your Scottish/Irish ancestry. Instead it's lumped together under the sub group British/Irish which isn't very informative.

Thank you for your feedback. Our Ancestry Composition report will tell you what percent of your DNA comes from each of 31 populations worldwide. At this time, we are not able to break down your British & Irish ancestry further. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

My spouse gave me 23andme for Christmas. As an adopted child I have no background to share with my children and 23andme gave me a starting point. I would recommend them especially if you are looking for a piece of yourself or hereditary traits for disease awareness.

The more interesting parts of my ancestry weren't even identified. The insights are useless drivel.

Thank you for your feedback. Our Ancestry Composition report will tell you what percent of your DNA comes from each of 31 populations worldwide. These populations are based on where your ancestors lived prior to the advent of intercontinental travel. Some populations are inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart. In these cases, your expected ancestry may actually be included in the broadly assigned ancestry for that region. The Broadly Assigned label is assigned when a piece of DNA can be found with some frequency in multiple regions.
If you do not see any ancestry assigned as you would have expected, this is because you more closely resembled our other reference populations genetically.

My wife's grandfather on her Mothers' side was pure Shawnee from Ky. But you show my wife's DNA as less than 0.1% Native American. How can that be?
Response from 23andme.comBy Customer Care, April 5, 2017
Thank you for your feedback. Evidence of your ancestors' DNA can be lost over time, and it may not be revealed in testing such as ours. Genetic genealogy services such as 23andMe cannot identify specific locations (cities, towns, or villages) or specific lineages (tribes or clans) that an individual may be descended from as this level of detail is difficult to distinguish based solely on DNA.
For more information on our existing reference populations, please visit the following help article: https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/202906830-Reference-populations-in-Ancestry-Composition
Currently 23andMe has several features that can reveal genetic evidence of Native American ancestry, although they are not considered a confirmatory test or proof of such ancestry in a legal context.
