Common Sense Results

I was so excited to get my results but when I did I was completely disappointed. I wish my ancestral findings were more specific. Knowing that I am an African American from West Africa is vague and I already knew that. Most black people can trace their roots to West Africa due to the slave trade. I wish I had results to a specific country at least but ideally a specific tribe. This kit was a waste of money for me.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for your feedback. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

At 23andMe we strive to keep pace with the current science and keep our customers up to date on new findings. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. We cannot predict when we will be updating our reference populations, but an announcement would likely be made in the Forums or on our blog.

Surprised and Pleased

My children bought this for me as a Christmas gift. Best present ever! My test results were back far sooner than I expected. I really like the way all this information is presented and the way the Ancestry report is broken down. Interesting features on the web site and emphasis on health related issues and research gives me a feeling of confidence in the company. I like what they are doing.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Thank you for your feedback. The 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service is the first and only genetic service available directly to you that includes reports that meet FDA standards. You now are able to receive 65+ reports on health, traits and ancestry instead of exclusively ancestry reports.

New discoveries!

A Christmas gift from my husband, I was fairly confident that I came from English and French Protestant ancestry. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that unbeknownst to me, or any family members of my generation, one of my grandparents was 100% Ashkenazi Jewish. This has opened up a desire to learn more about my heritage as well as a curiosity about the reasons for my family's immigration to the USA in the early 20th Century. Because I was also given the health genetic analysis, my fears about potential genetic health issues were immediately assuaged. Little did I know that a Christmas gift would raise so many questions about secrets held by my family for so many years.
I would recommend this to a friend!

When it first came in I was so excited! The process was easy and fast. I waited for 4 weeks to get my report. The report was fun to read and it was fun to learn about my past. Thank you so much!!
