I bought ancestry tests for both my new husband and myself for Christmas. We were both excited to get our results....it felt like a second Christmas! The process was very simple and the test results were clear and illustrated so they were easy to understand.

Absolute waste of money! Learned nothing new and spent $200 to have them tell me I'm European and most likely have light hair and light eyes.... like I couldn't deduct that on my own!

Thank you for your feedback. 23andMe provides you with one of the most detailed ancestry composition reports on the market today. You can find out about your ancestral origins, what percent of your DNA comes from populations around the world, your maternal and paternal lines and your neanderthal percentage.
In terms of already knowing your hair and eye color, trait reports can be a fun way to learn how your genetics influence such things as the color of your eyes, whether you’ve got dimples, and if you have a sweet tooth. But when designing these reports, we also wanted to illustrate that it’s not just your genetics that determines these traits, but other factors as well. What’s also useful about these reports is that they can tell you how similar or unique you are when compared to the rest of 23andMe’s customers.
The concept behind how we report the Trait results is fairly simple. Each report is based on specific genetic markers associated with that particular trait. Customers can read more about how we determine which markers to use in the Scientific Details tab on each report.
As one example, consider the report on eye color. This report is based on a single genetic marker, rs12913832, that plays a large role in determining eye color. At this marker, your genotype could be either AA, AG, or GG. If you have an AG, 23andMe analyzes the data from 23andMe research participants who also have an AG, and in the left ring chart shows the percentage of those people who have brown, hazel, green, or blue eyes. In other words, the left ring chart is the eye-color breakdown of research participants who have your same genotype at this marker and have answered the eye-color survey question.

I think I'm going to try another company to see whether they agree. The results that I received from 23and Me don't jive with what I actually know.

Thank you for your feedback. Our Ancestry Composition report tells you what percent of your DNA comes from each of 31 populations worldwide. The analysis includes DNA you received from all of your ancestors, on both sides of your family. Some populations are inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart. In these cases, your expected ancestry may actually be included in the broadly assigned ancestry for that region. The Broadly Assigned label is assigned when a piece of DNA can be found with some frequency in multiple regions.

Not very specific.

I was disappointed in this DNA test. It needs much improvement. It was not very specific. 50% accuracy just isn't good enough. The whole reason we took the test was to find out specifically the ancestry not "broadly European" That could mean so many different regions. It was interesting and good for entertainment. There's not enough information and I question the accuracy.

Big disappointment

The reports are all on internet. For that amount of money, a person should receive a nice booklet of the standard information with a few pages inserted that is specific to that person. Printing the documents oneself is not that easy---information spilled over from one page to another---some of the information didn't print or was too light to read in print. Also, the footnoted or branched information was item by item look-up and who wants to read all of that on internet. Printed copy is better so you can make notes etc. I was pretty disappointed.

Thank you for your feedback. 23andMe is an exclusively online service. Your online 23andMe account contains information that is automatically updated as we are able to improve our existing reports and add new reports. We would be unable to make these continual updates and improvements if we mailed hard copies of your results.

Not what I expected

I expected it to be more specific - which is it? English OR Irish - French OR German? What about Scottish? I've gone over and over the Neanderthal info and still have no clue what it means. Now that I thought about it, I'd like to change my rating to the least satisfied.

Thank you for your feedback. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.
You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide: https://www.23andme.com/ancestry_composition_guide/
Neanderthals were a group of ancient humans who lived in Europe and Western Asia. They are the closest evolutionary relatives of modern humans, but they went extinct about 40,000 years ago. Evidence of Neanderthal DNA is now found in traces among modern humans.
