To the genetics un-informed, it doesn't make sense

Your "results" listed my ancestry after I reported the same information on your application form. Really didn't tell me anything new, you just repeated the facts I presented to you.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for your feedback. While there is a short ethnicity questionnaire that is associated with your profile information, these answers are not used to generate your ancestry results.
The data that we report is strictly genetic information regarding your genotype (e.g. the A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s at particular locations in your genome), generated through the processing of your saliva by 23andMe. Participation in surveys is completely voluntary. Choosing not to participate will not affect your genetic data.

Overlapping Relatives

I find the information provided by 23andm3 unreliable. For example: Reviewing a person who is listed as a third cousin, the common matches under that person will include people that are know relations through my maternal line and through my paternal line. Therefore, I don't know if the 'third cousin" and the rest of the common matches are actually related to me through my mother or through my father. Also, the lists do not remain consistent. A person who was a common match one day will not be included at another time. For that matter, the number of overall relatives fluctuates up and down. How does it go down?

Useful Tool

I do find the comparison tool to be very useful. Quite frustrating are the number of folks who do not wish to share trees. I would like a function to be put in place that is someone is not willing to share their tree, that they do not have access to mine. So many folks are very guarded, and this is their right. I just feel to get something from those of us who are being very open, the very least you should be willing to share your information.

Don't Waste your time or money. If you don't know your history this won't help at all.

The new family tree feature will be great once we learn how to use it. We can combine what we think we know with what the science says.

I have been active on other websites in gathering history of my relatives and on other dna testing sites. Initially I used 23andMe for the health testing feedback, which I found of value and unique. Subsequently, I have connected with several relatives on 23andMe and helped them to connect with their past using my previous family research. 23andMe seems to attract participants who are hoping for the system to do the work for them. By that I mean, they are reluctant to provide their name or in many cases any background such as parental birth locations etc. All in, I have enjoyed the experience and the information provided by the website. I just wish others would put a bit more effort into their online database.

Could Be Better If.....

This product could be better if more people nationally and worldwide submitted to the test, or if all such DNA services could be combined into 1 database. It would also be better if famous people that share DNA could be identified, and if participants would not use initials, would fill out their profiles more completely, and be more responsive to contacts from participants they share DNA with.

Great, but the User Interface still needs work

I really love the depth of information and the ability to connect with other people. They have spent a lot of time on the "what does this mean" part of the website. I'm frustrated with the user interface and navigation. For example. My dad joined recently, so I was looking at the haplogroups between him and myself. It made me want to look at the same information with other members of the family that I'm connected with. It wasn't impossible, but it was close to impossible, and took over an hour to figure out how.
