Incomprehensible reports

Much of the data on this site is totally incomprehensible to the average Ph.D. unless yours is in biology or mathematics. I really wish that simplified explanations were available. I have a Ph.D. in education with a focus on physical and social sciences.

I don't understand why you are asking questions all the time now. 'when open it on the home page there are questions that are silly about caffeine???
I joined many years ago, and found it fascinating though complicated. I recently bought a subscription for my 4 children...to a fault, they all say it is stupid, that you ask them too many questions. They are finding it very difficult to find any information. I plan to phone someone at 23andme soon to have a conversation about this, but I just got a call from a very upset daughter that prompted this letter.

This is a great tool! I have made connections and started filling in gaps in my ancestry. I have found close family members I've never met or knew about until now.

My father died when I was young. While I had some information, nothing past my great grandparents names. I have history now, made connections, information on their lives and deaths. I love genealogy and I've shared everything I've found out. Thank you.

Learned I have a niece!

I took the test just wanting the health results and thought the ancestry would be cool. Instead I found out that I had a niece that my family didn’t know about and she had taken the test searching for her biological family. It has been great to learn amid each other and unite my brother with the daughter he didn’t know he had!

Love Health & Connections. Ancestry Issues!!!

On the positive side, I am extremely impressed with the comprehensive array of reports that are available, especially if you do Health + Ancestry. Unfortunately, my Ancestry experience with 23andme is unsatisfactory. I and my sister have both done 23andme. We happen to know our parentage very well, and we are unusual in that our father (we have different mothers) is from Uganda, in East Africa. We both have done ancestry composition with a competing company and that competition rightly discerned that my sister is 97% East African (due to her Ugandan mother and father) and that I am ~48% East African (due to my Ugandan father and Black American mother). 23andme's ancestry composition for us was silly, identifying both of us as over 70+% West African with negligible East African content. That is such an obvious flaw given our knowledge of our parentage and confirmation of our siblingship that it calls into question (in my mind) the accuracy of all of the other information I've gotten from 23andme. While I love the flow and feel of 23andme's services, I can't recommend it to anyone else because the ancestry composition analysis for my family is verifiably off in a big way.

Thank you for your feedback. We are currently able to break out West African,
East African, Central and South African and broadly Sub-Saharan African populations.

Keep in mind that your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.

We have launched the African Genetics Project to help advance our research on African ancestry. Our aim is to help people make new discoveries about their African identity by way of their DNA.
