Learned I have a niece!

I took the test just wanting the health results and thought the ancestry would be cool. Instead I found out that I had a niece that my family didn’t know about and she had taken the test searching for her biological family. It has been great to learn amid each other and unite my brother with the daughter he didn’t know he had!

Love Health & Connections. Ancestry Issues!!!

On the positive side, I am extremely impressed with the comprehensive array of reports that are available, especially if you do Health + Ancestry. Unfortunately, my Ancestry experience with 23andme is unsatisfactory. I and my sister have both done 23andme. We happen to know our parentage very well, and we are unusual in that our father (we have different mothers) is from Uganda, in East Africa. We both have done ancestry composition with a competing company and that competition rightly discerned that my sister is 97% East African (due to her Ugandan mother and father) and that I am ~48% East African (due to my Ugandan father and Black American mother). 23andme's ancestry composition for us was silly, identifying both of us as over 70+% West African with negligible East African content. That is such an obvious flaw given our knowledge of our parentage and confirmation of our siblingship that it calls into question (in my mind) the accuracy of all of the other information I've gotten from 23andme. While I love the flow and feel of 23andme's services, I can't recommend it to anyone else because the ancestry composition analysis for my family is verifiably off in a big way.

Thank you for your feedback. We are currently able to break out West African,
East African, Central and South African and broadly Sub-Saharan African populations.

Keep in mind that your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.

We have launched the African Genetics Project to help advance our research on African ancestry. Our aim is to help people make new discoveries about their African identity by way of their DNA.

Researched other DNA sites and felt your site would be the most thorough considering the cost (which was more expensive), and the advertised content. Was disappointed in that you do not follow up with some kind of paper booklet or printout of results. It could even be something the consumer could request. Sometimes paper in hand is still the best!

Thank you for your feedback. The information available to you through the 23andMe Personal Genome Service is presented exclusively online within your 23andMe account. We do not send printed versions of your various 23andMe reports via mail or email.

Your online 23andMe account contains information that is automatically updated as we are able to improve our existing reports and add new reports. We would be unable to make these continual updates and improvements if we mailed hard copies of your results.

Nice but confusing.

The definition of regions is way to gross. Look at Africa, it is made up of many countries not just a blob called Africa. The same with Europe. Haplogroups is so poorly explained that it is useless unless perhaps if you already were an expert. It's great to have another source of finding and restoring relationships, but overall I am disappointed.

Thank you for your feedback. To view a full list of the reference populations, please click the blue "See all 31 tested populations" link under your Ancestry Composition results.

The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide:
https://www.23andme.com/ancestry-composition-guide/

We have implemented an ongoing quality review process and are actively taking steps to make our products understandable to the widest possible audience while maintaining our scientific standards.

In the meantime, we have several tutorials and FAQs listed in our Help Center: https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us
