Overall, not bad.

Pros:
- Really good timing, results came back within four weeks.
- Easy to navigate the website at all stages and the process was overall seamless.
- No false promises - it does what it says on the label pretty much.
- The comparisons between my own results and the results of others from the same pool of customers is also interesting.
Cons:
- The results were descriptive more than analytical. I already know what my hair colour is and I know my ring finger is longer than my index. I also know I am of South Asian descent - I didnt need to pay almost $200 to find these things out. I was expecting the results to be more detailed, for eg: which countries specifically was my ancestors from? I already know which continents they were from. Is there a significance to one finger being longer than the other?
Overall:
It was cool to know that alot of the things could be found out from a DNA test . I didn't know the finger lengths could be determined; chin dimples; caffeine absorption; and unibrows. It was definitely interesting and I would still recommend to a friend but only depending on what they were hoping to find/test for. Probably only best for those wanting to test for any of the listed illnesses/diseases on the website.
I would recommend this to a friend!

"Broadly" category is not helpful

I'm disappointed with the categories and the way they are used. Specifically, the breakdown in my European component shows "Iberian", "Italian" and "Broadly Southern European." The problem is that Southern European, by your definition, includes Iberian, Italian and Balkan so I really have no idea what percent Iberian nor Italian I am. I would much preferred an "educated guess" or an estimate breaking up the "Broadly Southern European" into something I can use. As it is, the best I can say is that I'm X% European. I already knew that without your help.
Disappointed, to say the least.

Thank you for your feedback. Ancestry Composition has the ability to assign pieces of your DNA at several geographic scales, according to where these pieces of DNA are found to be common throughout the world. For example, one piece of DNA might be found only in Italian people, so we can with some confidence call this DNA "Italian". Another piece of DNA might be found with some frequency in populations within Italian, Balkan, Sardinian, and Iberian ancestry. Instead of choosing arbitrarily from among these regions, Ancestry Composition will label these pieces “Broadly Southern European."

If a piece of DNA is found all over Europe, but not outside Europe, Ancestry Composition will label that DNA “Broadly European." Pieces of DNA found in multiple widespread regions, such as Europe, the Near East, and Asia, will be labeled “Unassigned.”

At 23andMe we strive to keep pace with the current science and keep our customers up to date on new findings. We cannot predict when we may be able to update our reference populations or the results you received, but an announcement would likely be made in the Forums or on our blog.

Really interesting - would definitely recommend

My husband bought this for me and my son (who I gave up for adoption at birth, but with whom I've since reunited). Its been interesting for me to see my own heritage (and so see that I have some DNA from parts of the globe that I'd never known about), as well as personal health information.
But the best part is giving my son a baseline so he can see what he has from his father's side - ethnicity as well as health history. Its been a very moving experience for all of us - so grateful it was available.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Thank you for the feedback. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide:

I am less likely to sneeze after eating chocolate, because of a neanderthal trait?
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
Response from 23andme.comBy Customer CareMarch 22, 2017
Thank you for your feedback. In your Neanderthal Ancestry report, you can review the traits that may be influenced by your Neanderthal markers. Scientists at 23andMe have identified associations between specific Neanderthal markers and certain physical traits. For example, Neanderthals variants are known to contribute to straighter hair, sneezing after eating dark chocolate, less back hair, and height.

I bought this to have confirmations about where my ancestors came from and to know about my carrier status... I'm disappointed that some very important carriers that can be life changing are not tested...

We will continue to work with the FDA to seek additional clearances for our product. However we are not able to speculate about changes to reports, or what may be available in the future, given our dialogue with the FDA is ongoing.
