Didn't invest my funds to find out if I am more likely to have wet ear wax or have ability to smell asparagus(?)
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for your feedback. The 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service is the first and only genetic service available directly to you that includes reports that meet FDA standards. You now are able to receive 75+ reports on health, traits and ancestry instead of exclusively ancestry reports.

Interesting and fun!

You might only want to confirm what you think your ancestry is, but you also might be surprised and amazed with new information as well. If you are doing some genealogy of your family, this information is a great complement to your data.

Don't waste your money

You think, oh great, I'm going to get some valuable information by doing this kit. NO!!! Not the case. For the different categories tested, your results say, "more likely to", or "less likely to".... Honetly, you pay way too much to get the minimal information you do get (if you understand their less/more likely verbiage. Don't let the 30+ categories of information get you excited either. I would definitely NOT recommend paying for this kit; I plan on spreading it on Facebook too! Just not worth the money!

An Opportunity to help with Myasthenia Gravis

I volunteered to submit a DNA sample to further study and research of Myasthenia Gravis. I was diagnosed with MG in January 2023. Shortly after diagnosis I saw the 23&Me offer to research MG. I answered 1550 questions and will monitor results and wish 23&Me success in learning more about MG.

Pointless Information

The information provided seems largely unimportant to me--Do you care if you were likely to have been born with very little hair? Do you need a genetic kit to tell you if you are likely to have a cleft chin or a unibrow--uh....look in the mirror. I am apparently likely to move more during sleep, unlikely to be lactose intolerant. I am apparently wired to drink less caffeine than the average person (I'm a coffee-holic). I am supposed to have either straight or wavy hair as opposed to very curly hair. Well, I have very curly hair. (and lumping straight and wavy hair into a single category seems a very broad category). I found most of the reports unimportant to me, and inconsistent in prediction. The only thing that could be construed as mildly helpful were the carrier status reports that list 41 diseases and let you know if you are a carrier for any of them. I suppose if I was planning to have a child, the information could be helpful, but if I was truly concerned, I'd probably want a more definitive test, like amniocentesis. Maybe I missed the point of the reports, but honestly, I find the whole thing rather pointless from my perspective.

While many traits are highly influenced by genetics, there are other non-genetic factors that affect the expression of certain traits.

To learn more about a trait, navigate to the result of interest and scroll to the About section. This section will tell you the description, biology, and non-genetic factors that are associated with the feature.

Broadly human

23andMe needs to improve its matching algorithm for its ancestry service : returning a large percentage matched with "Broadly from X, Y or Z" is not very informative at all. I should be reimbursed for the percentage of my DNA that was "broadly" matched as it is of very little significance. I already knew I was "broadly human", no need to pay $99.00 to find that out. ;-)

Thank you for your feedback. To view a full list of the reference populations, please click the blue "See all 31 tested populations" link under your Ancestry Composition results.

The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide:

My daughter bought the kit for my Birthday in December as I had tried to find a connection to my bio father that I did know. I did get a message saying We were first cousins on father’s side.

Thank you for your feedback. DNA Relatives can help to identify whether and to what degree two 23andMe customers are related to each other.

DNA Relatives locates other 23andMe members that match your DNA and predicts a relationship using the number of segments and the percent DNA shared. When two people share identical segments of DNA, this indicates that they share a recent common ancestor.

Keep in mind that the DNA Relatives feature can label your relatives that share DNA with both you and your parent. However, we are only able to label your relatives as paternal or maternal if you have that parent genotyped by 23andMe.
