Totally Unreliable

I am 1/8 American Indian and that was totally missed in the analysis.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for your feedback. Having Native American DNA is different from having Native American ancestry. We understand that the distinction between ancestry and DNA can cause confusion.
Your results from 23andMe can only show you what can be seen in your DNA. Native American DNA is often lost with time and with every generation and may not be revealed in testing such as ours. For example, it only takes a couple of generations from a full-blooded Native American to lose all trace of Native American DNA.
This does not mean that you do not have Native American ancestry or that your family heritage as passed down through the generations is incorrect.
Your results from 23andMe can only show you what can be seen in your DNA. Native American DNA is often lost with time and with every generation and may not be revealed in testing such as ours. Very vague

I had to do this test twice! Not sure what happened the first time. My great grandparents were cherokee Indians but my heritage didn't show that at all!!! It's like that didn't exist and that's the part of my heritage I wanted to explore!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

23 and Me offers a more comprehensive test than most DNA services. I really appreciate the health reports and the deeper understanding of human migration patterns that can be gleaned from the haplogroups. The traits reports are fun, but keep in mind that the estimates are pretty general unless there is a very high confidence interval. It is regrettable that the health risk reports have been curtailed due to privacy/insurance concerns, but overall there is still a lot of fascinating information presented.

somewhat dissappointed

I was please with the product until I found an additional source that revealed that I have a fairly rare but serious homozygous mutation of the C677T MTHFR gene. This information was invaluable because I have several vitamin deficiencies and symptoms. In addition had I been of child bearing age the mutation could have directly impacted the fetus through miscarriages and or neural tube defects to down syndrome. I did not have children so I don't know for sure if there would have been any effect. I really think this should be included in the rare disease report as 10-15% of the Caucasian and Hispanic populations may have this mutation. If a friend asked me about this product I would give mixed reviews.

Medical Enhancement

I am more science orientated then family tree. I chose 23 /Me so I could see what medical passed down through the ages. And to be part of research right from my home. As time progresses and I have begun to reach out to others in the tree, though right now, I have only 3rd cousin's and beyond listed. I am able to make a 'medical' tree too. My own results showed me why I had the medical problems I did as a child. It gave me peace of mind over some other areas that generations suffered from in their life time. After just 6 weeks, I find the research is still the strong draw. Because the 'finding other family' is a long tedious process. And connections don't come over night. Many don't visit their sites I suppose once a week like I have tried to make the habit of doing. I love reading the medical articles under the different categories!

I finally met my dad!

I received this kit as a gift, and it connected me with a close DNA relative who was able to identify my father. I then purchased a kit for my father, to confirm the results - and it did! We are thrilled to have found each other, and have discovered we are so much alike in temperament, looks, world views, and talents. It's been incredible!

Amazing!

Because of 23 and Me, we just found out that we have a half-sister we didn't know about! She is 75 and we sisters are 70, 69, 67, 62, and 61. We also have a brother who is 73. None of us knew about our older sister. We're going to meet in two weeks and are so excited to meet each other! Who knew?!
