23andMe is the best gift you can give someone or yourself because it is the gift that will keep on giving. The information I learned from 23andMe is very valuable to me and my family. As much as you think you know yourself, 23andMe will teach you more. I enjoy the health and ancestry information I got on myself and I also enjoy the research aspect of 23andMe. With 23andMe I can give back to my community by contributing to important research. Also the more I contribute the more I learn about myself and others. There are so many gifts within the 23andMe product that everyday I discover something new about myself and people like me. I recommend 23andMe to everyone because it is the gift you owe yourself. Get 23andMe and Get to know yourself better and help others find out who they are as well.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Finding my past

Some people don't want to know about their DNA or their origins. I did and I am glad to know that there is a lot more to me than I ever knew. I love that there is a small percentage of Ashkenazi, Asian, and other mixes I would have missed had it not been for this test. As I keep discovering my past, I hope to build my family tree with at least 4 or 5 generations.

Disappointing features on the current reports

When I first joined 23andme, many of my relatives shared their ancestry information with me, and I was able to make notes on the main page listing matches. When the program was revised, the space for notes disappeared as well as all the shared information from my matching relatives. It has been very difficult to get them to respond to notes or share ancestry information. I believe that is partially because they think they shared it once, so why do they have to share again. Also, the directions on the current version of 23andme are very confusing to new members. Although matches can be seen, very few individuals have provided surnames of ancestors on their profile. The program was wonderful when I first joined. It provides very little useful information now. I'm very disappointed it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thanks for your feedback. You can add notes to any of your DNA Relatives matches using the icons to the right of the compare page after clicking on their name.
DNA Relatives locates other 23andMe members that match your DNA. This feature is just one of our many features, and it is important to keep in mind that our customers use our service for a variety of reasons.
We are unable to determine if or when other 23andMe customers will respond to your sharing invitations or messages. We leave the option of responding to DNA Relatives introductions solely to the customer.

I have always wanted to know where I came from, but the best part is that no one in family ever like to talk about what health issues may arises everything is so hush hush. And once you find out someone might say oh I knew about cause aunt so-so had that and she died. So at my age I need to know what I can turn around if any at all.

Experience with my 23 & Me

I like 23 & Me, good results, fair on the ancestry. Should do more regarding pin pointing Indigenous ancestry. I am a descendant of the Guanahatabey - proven via C. Lalueza Fox's mtDNA study of Western Cuba and western Dominican Guanahatabey assemblages. Waiting for 23 & Me to research Denisovian ancestry.

I have fully enjoyed my 23andMe! It has opened up more about my ancestors and let me get more insight to my heritage. I have been entirely thrilled with the outcomes.

A work in progress

23 and me is a work in progress. Since I joined there have been many changes . It seems like the company is trying to get a handle on what the final product will look like. I like the genealogy part of it. I like the list of DNA matches and how they are related to me. I have used it to help me solve my family tree. I like how the compare feature works with the matches in common. . It actually shows how closely related the person I am comparing is to my list of relatives. Some of the other genealogy sites don't have this feature. They will give you a list of matches in common but won't tell what the percentage of the relationship is. Its good that the anonymous option is being eliminated. It was frustrating trying to find out who the person was. They would not answer you. People complained about this. A actual name should be required also , not just initials. The health feature I liked when it first came out. Had some good info. It didn't bother me. The govt said it had to change which is too bad. I am grandfathered in , but I never pay much attention to the health end of it anymore . Seems to be watered down. I like answering the health survey questions. I hope it helps somebody out. 23 and me is one of the tools I use for genealogy . I am glad its out there. Sounds like it heading in the right direction and getting things squared away.

23andMe Saved My Life!

When I got my results, I thought: "Great, I have no serious illnesses and, most importantly, I do not have the breast or ovarian cancer gene." My mother died after suffering from ovarian cancer for 17 years and doctors told me I had a one-in-two chance of contracting it myself, which was the primary reason I took the test. Fast forward three years later when I broke my ankle in three places on the first day of our Jamaican vacation. We returned to Kansas City and I'm sitting with an orthopedic surgeon discussing my upcoming operation; I take out my phone and access my 23andMe results online (How cool is that?), I show him that my primary health issue was Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). While the average for most people was 7%, mine is 22%. I was impressed by how seriously my surgeon took the results from 23andMe. He told me that in the 8 days leading up to my operation I would get phone calls and emails from the hospital informing me NOT to take aspirin because of bleeding but to ignore them. Instead, I HAVE to take aspirin because of my DVT issues. Two days after my operation, my Primary Care Physician, who is also my neighbor, dropped by and was very unhappy I was advised to stay in bed for three to five days. She told me three of the main causes of DVT are: 1) an injury to an extremity (CHECK); 2) major surgery (CHECK) and 3) being sedentary (CHECK). My PCP had seen my 23andMe results three years before when I gave her a printout for my health records. She also took them very seriously and made notes about the DVT at the time. She consulted with my surgeon and they agreed I needed to give myself daily injections of Lovenox for two weeks in order to prevent blood clotting. Two years later, I still have not had an incident with blood clots (on long plane rides I know to get up and walk around every 90 minutes). My family and friends have also done 23andMe based on my positive experience. I honestly believe, and tell everyone I meet, that 23andMe saved my life!
