If you are looking for any sort of idea about your national or racial origins, forget it. This test couldn't name what country I was from. It guessed at a hugely wide geographic area spanning 2 continents! If you want to know if you were born somewhere on planet earth this test will do that.

Thank you for your feedback. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.
You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide: https://www.23andme.com/ancestry_composition_guide/
Your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.

Filling in the Blanks........

I had a very good of what my genetic make-up and ethnicity should be. My cousins are amateur genealogists and have documented my maternal side of the family back to 1215 AD. They ran into issues on my paternal side and really needed more information to continue the search. There was an old family rumor which needed to be confirmed. I purchased the product to potentially fill in the blanks. Without ones family tree the information has little meaning, but as one follows through things about your ancestry will become very clear. Two origins stood out as potential targets of the family rumor, French and German. Most of ones' ethnicity shows up in the last three generations, as I understand it. The punch line to my story and the missing link in my tree is that I am probably the illegitimate great great grandson of the fifteenth Cardinal of Prague Czechoslovakia. French and German is definitely the lineage of the Cardinal, going back 5-8 generations.

I like knowing the % stuff but I thought it would show more specific genetics. For example: 10% Danish, 20% German, 15% Swedish, 20% Norweigen, 1% Cherrakee Indian, etc.etc.etc.

It's definitely a cool and interesting concept but unfortunately none of my results were specific at all. It pretty much broke it into continents. I really would have preferred countries rather than "South Asia" and when I click on the drop down it just says South Asia again, and "European" and when I click on the drop down it says "broadly european." I mean I could've guessed more specific answers. It should have just said "100% homosapien"

I bought this in hopes I could find my ancestry but instead I got "likely" people that are sixth, tenth etc.. cousins because a strand or two of our DNA matche. All of the other things they hypotheses about are more based of the hundreds of questions asked. In my opinion it was a waste of my time and money. It should be clearly stated that if you are interested in finding or making a family tree this is not the product for that.

Thank you for your feedback. DNA Relatives locates other 23andMe members that match your DNA. This feature estimates a predicted relationship and range using the length and number of segments and percent DNA shared. When two people share identical segments of DNA, this indicates that they share a recent common ancestor.
Keep in mind that the number of relatives will vary for each person and will grow over time as more people join 23andMe.
The data that we report is strictly genetic information regarding your genotype (e.g. the A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s at particular locations in your genome), generated through processing of your saliva by 23andMe. Participation in surveys is completely voluntary. Choosing not to participate will not affect your genetic data.
