23&Me- The journey

23 & Me ~ The results. I spent more than a little time culling over all the reports. Much of it was a confirmation of what I already knew, 98.9% European, and the surprise was 1.1% Asian. Imagine looking back 400 generations spanning centuries and distant strange worlds. The Euro mix was Spanish, Irish, French and some German. My eighth great-grandparent was Asian and likely born between 1690-1780. My Irish great-grandparent was likely born 1720-1810. The Paternal line is R-L21 (modern European) I descend from a long line of men that can be traced back to eastern Africa over 275,000 years ago. These are the men in my paternal line and my paternal haplogroup. My Maternal haplogroup is H6a1b (common in women middle- east and west to France). Genetics about how information is stored and transmitted between generations, and the 23&me DNA reports and chromosome charts painted a colored mural of my ancestry. Fundamentally, I wanted to push the boundaries of what’s possible to help turn genetic insight into better health and personal understanding. All this information sheds light on a few things. Now, I better understand my proclivity towards France, Spain, Ireland, and Israel. I feel a small part of history and potent genius loci in each of these places; their beckoning always leads me back. I wonder about the color of their eyes, the sound of their voices and the lines on their faces. Their languages are long gone, their names are forgotten, their currencies evolved and their graves have dissolved; yet they live on. Stealing across the meadows of my heart is the notion they gazed at the heavens in childlike wonder as they lived, loved and died. Their eyes are my eyes. I wonder what they left behind when they moved on? How were they treated when migrating to new shores? I hope kindly. On both sides, my family has some answers from previous generations, but exploring the distant past defies my imagination. At first, I thought, why should I care? Does it matter? It so does on so many levels. Its a mix of humility, wonder, and gratefulness as I looked at the reports featuring my progenitors. I didn't expect a Caesar, Charlemagne or Khan to fall out; no, I was more interested in journeys they traversed. I got a better understanding of my sequenced genome and marveled at the fact that research is a blind date with knowledge. We've come so far but still so far to go. I'm privileged to have this information and hope more people take this journey as well. If you want more than a family tree, this is for you. So far, I've met dozens of distant cousins who share the same DNA and genomic makeup. -Here's my conclusion - we are all related, so being kind may come more natural. I love Lin-Manuel Miranda's quote, "Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside." #23andMe

I have used 23 & me for some time now. The health evaluations are interesting, & helpful. At my age, 79, I know most of what to look for, but I can also warn my children about family health problems. But what I am very disappointed in is I know from genealogy that my great grand parents on both sides of my tree are Native Americans. My test showed no Native American blood. I am disappointed & a bit angry with this omission. Obviously the test is far from perfect.

I have been on 23 and me for about a year. I was hoping to be able to find lost relatives, particularly my father's family. Unfortunately I have not made as much progress as I would have liked. It's very difficult for adopted kids because you don't have anything to work with. But I keep trying and hoping that a closer relative will show up or someone on here will be more cooperative. Oh well. It's progress.

Results were not specific enough. The questions I answered when I submitted the sample gave you enough information to reach these results.

Thank you for your feedback. While there is a short ethnicity questionnaire that is associated with your profile information, these answers are not used to generate your ancestry results.
The data that we report is strictly genetic information regarding your genotype (e.g. the A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s at particular locations in your genome), generated through processing of your saliva by 23andMe. Participation in surveys is completely voluntary. Choosing not to participate will not affect your genetic data.

Someone had bought this for me in order to see if she is related to me but the information i got was very general, to say the least. What a complete waste if time and money.

Thank you for your feedback. One of the features included in our service is called DNA Relatives. You can access this feature from the Tools section of your account.
DNA Relatives locates other 23andMe members that match your DNA. This feature estimates a predicted relationship and range using the length and number of segments and percent DNA shared. When two people share identical segments of DNA, this indicates that they share a recent common ancestor.
Unlike other genetic genealogy services that identify relationships on only the direct paternal or maternal lines, DNA Relatives can identify relationships on any branch of your family tree. It does this by taking advantage of the autosomal chromosomes—the 22 chromosomes that are passed down from your ancestors on both sides of your family.
Keep in mind that the number of relatives will vary for each person and will grow over time as more people join 23andMe.

Weak reporting capability - paid more for the health screen and received no real info related to health...this is the same as going to a palm reader...total waste of time.
