Found Family

I bought the kit for myself, my husband and my mother. I wanted to see how my mother's DNA differed from mine since she was uncertain about who my father was.
23&me found my half sister and with her help we determined who our father was. She was adopted, but now she has a blood relative, me.

I am a recent 23andMe user. I gave 23andMe to my daughter for Christmas 2016. Her results came back there was a connection to someone in Vietnam. We are of mixed Vietnamese and American parents. My father was in the Army and my Mom was a Vietnamese national. They were married for 25 years. This lead me to getting my own sample kit to verify if this person could be related to me. Come to find out she IS! Here is the background:
My mom was a young Vietnamese woman during the Vietnam war. Not making the best of decisions she had a relationship with a married American man which produced a baby girl. He was of no support to her and she struggled to support her new daughter. After a few months, she realized that the best chance for her daughter to survive and thrive she surrendered her to an orphanage ran by French nuns. She has explained to me that it was the hardest thing for her to do. She has told me that not a day has gone by that she didn’t think about her.
During April 1975, there was a big push to move American/Vietnamese babies to other countries for their safety. It was called Operation Babylift. Unfortunately, one of the planes had crashed killing 78 children. My mom was told that her daughter was killed in that crash. She gave up hope thinking that she would never see her again.
Fast forward to Sunday April 30th. I received my results and when I opened my connections there she was! The same lady that connected to my daughter. She was a match for “Half Sister” I reached out to her and offered to call her. After hearing her story and understanding what limited history I know for my mom, I was sure it was a match.
I went home that evening and told my mom of the news. She did not believe me at first, but when I told her that it was a DNA match she started to cry. She wanted nothing more than for it to be true. I told her that we would Facetime my sister after dinner. I have never seen my mom so nervous. I talked to my sister first to ease them in to it. What happened next was overwhelming.
I passed the iPad to my mom and there was silence for a good 30 seconds. My mom exploded with emotions and started to cry and apologize for not being around for 52 years. The next hour was spent speaking Vietnamese and crying. I don’t understand what was said, but I could tell that there were smiles and laughing towards the end. They were comparing facial features among other things.
I am flying our mom out to meet face to face next week May 10th.
I cannot thank you enough for the work that you do. You have made an old Vietnamese woman find closure to something that was eating at her throughout her life. I hope that others use 23anMe and find that missing connection that they are looking for.

Thank you for your feedback. The 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service is the first and only genetic service available directly to you that includes reports that meet FDA standards. You now are able to receive 75+ reports on health, traits and ancestry instead of exclusively ancestry reports.

23&Me- The journey

23 & Me ~ The results. I spent more than a little time culling over all the reports. Much of it was a confirmation of what I already knew, 98.9% European, and the surprise was 1.1% Asian. Imagine looking back 400 generations spanning centuries and distant strange worlds. The Euro mix was Spanish, Irish, French and some German. My eighth great-grandparent was Asian and likely born between 1690-1780. My Irish great-grandparent was likely born 1720-1810. The Paternal line is R-L21 (modern European) I descend from a long line of men that can be traced back to eastern Africa over 275,000 years ago. These are the men in my paternal line and my paternal haplogroup. My Maternal haplogroup is H6a1b (common in women middle- east and west to France). Genetics about how information is stored and transmitted between generations, and the 23&me DNA reports and chromosome charts painted a colored mural of my ancestry. Fundamentally, I wanted to push the boundaries of what’s possible to help turn genetic insight into better health and personal understanding. All this information sheds light on a few things. Now, I better understand my proclivity towards France, Spain, Ireland, and Israel. I feel a small part of history and potent genius loci in each of these places; their beckoning always leads me back. I wonder about the color of their eyes, the sound of their voices and the lines on their faces. Their languages are long gone, their names are forgotten, their currencies evolved and their graves have dissolved; yet they live on. Stealing across the meadows of my heart is the notion they gazed at the heavens in childlike wonder as they lived, loved and died. Their eyes are my eyes. I wonder what they left behind when they moved on? How were they treated when migrating to new shores? I hope kindly. On both sides, my family has some answers from previous generations, but exploring the distant past defies my imagination. At first, I thought, why should I care? Does it matter? It so does on so many levels. Its a mix of humility, wonder, and gratefulness as I looked at the reports featuring my progenitors. I didn't expect a Caesar, Charlemagne or Khan to fall out; no, I was more interested in journeys they traversed. I got a better understanding of my sequenced genome and marveled at the fact that research is a blind date with knowledge. We've come so far but still so far to go. I'm privileged to have this information and hope more people take this journey as well. If you want more than a family tree, this is for you. So far, I've met dozens of distant cousins who share the same DNA and genomic makeup. -Here's my conclusion - we are all related, so being kind may come more natural. I love Lin-Manuel Miranda's quote, "Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside."

Some good, some bad

I have used 23 & me for some time now. The health evaluations are interesting, & helpful. At my age, 79, I know most of what to look for, but I can also warn my children about family health problems. But what I am very disappointed in is I know from genealogy that my great grand parents on both sides of my tree are Native Americans. My test showed no Native American blood. I am disappointed & a bit angry with this omission. Obviously the test is far from perfect.

Pluses and minuses

I have been on 23 and me for about a year.
I was hoping to be able to find lost relatives, particularly my father's family.
Unfortunately I have not made as much progress as I would have liked.
It's very difficult for adopted kids because you don't have anything to work with.
But I keep trying and hoping that a closer relative will show up or someone on here will be more cooperative.
Oh well. It's progress.
