Excellent experience!

The email informing me that my 23andme reports were ready for me to see was the best email I have ever received! It was almost like Christmas! I was adopted at birth so it was more important than ever to know what was "swirling around" inside me! Turns out that the information I had been given about some of my biological family was way off the mark. Thanks to 23andme, I now have a better idea of who I am and where I came from! Thank you 23andme for giving me peace of mind and answers, and for the chance to have contact with people who share my DNA.

Why wouldn't you be into 23 and Me?!

A couple of friends, learning I had applied to learn my DNA, commenetd on how "brave" I was. To me, bravery didn't come into it. Rather, as they say: To be forewarned is to be forearmed.
For example, I specifically wanted to know if I was a possible candidate for Alzheimers: that was the motivation for having my DNA tested. Now I know that I do have that propensity, I am affirmed in continuing to live a healthy, active lifestyle, with daily exercise, stimulating mental work, lots of social contacts AND living to the maximum, while I can!
To me, having the test is a no-brainer. I can't understand why everyone wouldn't want to follow suit!
I appreciate the necesary caveats provided and the sense of support. The service feels to be a responsible one, with a sense of integrity. Much appreciated.

Shocking results

I got my kit for Christmas, it was easy to register and set up my account. The hardest part was the wait and it was worth it, I am so happy I got this.

My review will not be positive. You gave me one set of ancestral reports which I thought were more reflective of the truth in light of my paper research, and then changed them in a later report to reflect a homogeneous readout not inclusive of all the groups and percentage breakdowns in the first. Needless to say, I have been disappointed that my results were changed for some reason.
I have not seen a contact number. I would love it if you could send me a copy of the original results so I can compare the two. I have them written down, but would like to see archived results of the original ancestral report also. I would appreciate that.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thanks for your feedback. Your Ancestry Composition is a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals, we are able to continually evolve and improve your results.
As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your Ancestry Composition. Connecting a biological parent or child to your own 23andMe profile will also allow your Ancestry Composition results to update and reflect this additional genetic information.

Long lost

I bought this kit to help me cross reference my ancestry research by testing my dna and I also wanted to check out health issues. My mother is adopted and there's a lot we don't know and would like to learn about. I was hoping to find clues to her biological family but wasn't optimistic. I was amazed to have found my mothers sister on her maternal side! They have been searching for her for 13 years. Sadly we missed my mother's biological mother by exactly a month. Now we are on the adventure of getting to know our "new" family.

Ability to connect with relatives

I've only had this since this month and very glad I purchased it. I'm 76 and realized I'm not Lithuanian at all, but Irish. I knew about the Scotch and English. Now trying to figure out who my dad was, since everyone Is deceased I need the help of my dna relatives.

Lack of important information

in one sentence they tell me I don't have a particular variant but there is a catch. The next sentence says there are other variants that would indicate I am a carrier so the test is worthless.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for your feedback. 23andMe performs genotyping by analyzing SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms), however we do not perform whole genome sequencing.
This approach allows us to cover the most common variants for each disease but does not allow us to do a comprehensive assessment of each gene.
We try to be as clear as possible about the limited nature of the reports by including the number of variants analyzed, the detection rate, and when possible the residual carrier risk (the chance that you are still a carrier even after our test).

With health

I bought this several months ago and it was easy to use. I got my results back sooner than I thought I would. The online aspects are easy to use and very user friendly. My doctor recommended this product to check for serious variants. I am happy I purchased the product and it does what it says and some. One good thing that has come from this test is my mom was adopted and I have made contact with that side of the family. My only con is that I wish that it had more personal results with the health aspect. Here again they allow you to search through your raw data if you know what SNP's you are looking for, I only know enough to get me in trouble :)
