Pay $100 for a result I already knew in which you could get most of the information through the questionnaire I answered!

Thank you for your feedback. While there is a short ethnicity questionnaire that is associated with your profile information, these answers are not used to generate your ancestry results.
The data that we report is strictly genetic information regarding your genotype (e.g. the A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s at particular locations in your genome), generated through the processing of your saliva by 23andMe. Participation in surveys is completely voluntary. Choosing not to participate will not affect your genetic data.

Amazing World of Cousins!

Now having a few years of 23AndMe under my belt, I must say it has been amazing to be matched to over 1,600 distant cousins in this country and around the world! This comes with features such as the ability to private message those matches who want to be contacted, and also the ability to do a search for every match that has a certain common name or country. The health info was and is an added bonus, especially since you can learn a lot about your probability of having or not having certain medical conditions, and you do not have to (and might not want to) share that info with your matches. You can restrict your sharing to only the genealogical matching.

I have had so much fun exploring this endless amount of information provided through 23andme. I would highly recommend getting the health info upgrade if possible, but you can always purchase it at a later time as well. I love that the site is always adding updated and new test results. I have made connections with relatives I never knew I had, and yes we are truly related!

23andMe's 'WOW' factor... or lack of.

This is the only DNA analysis kit that I've purchased, so far, so have no other to compare it to. I own a couple of degrees beyond high school and I find this program a little stodgy and bloated to navigate through. While its "WOW" factor is obviously focused for marketing purposes I personally don't feel that much attention has been given to the general laity's utility and navigational issues. I also would appreciate a feature to allow me to easily copy my data from the program (rather than by my own hand). Lastly, I see no feature that alerts me if I should happen to receive a contact from a family member if or when it should come in. ON THE 'UP' SIDE: they (23andMe) have used pleasingly soft pastel colors throughout!

So Much To Love!!

23 and Me has given me so much information and has been very interesting. I love making contact with relatives that I never knew I had, as well as learning many new things about my family history. It was surprising to learn that my DNA did not match what my Grandparents had told us! One of my favorite features is learning that more new people have been identified as matches. I have become great friends with some newly discovered 5th cousins. You never know where this journey will lead you.

Love finding relatives

I purchased this a few years ago for my husband and myself. For him, it was mostly verifying where he came from and was happy to find a little more than his original thoughts. For me, it was finding out for sure what I knew about myself was correct, and also was happily surprised with a little more information about myself. I always figured that my ancestor that was left behind living with an "Indian Tribe" when his parents went back to England had contributed to the stories of his native American wife. Finding that link and the "probable years" was the verification of this story. It's nice to have other finds in the genealogy. The health reports are very important if one is looking for clues and I love the traits reports. There is more than just where you come from and lots of information to be found. I love it!

Tough to Connect

It is way more difficult to connect with your relatives than it ought to be. They need a few new IT folks to help smooth this out. I bought each kid a kit, and none of them show up in my ancestry list though it acknowledges them. Very confusing. Probably younger folks may have an easier time with it.

Accuracy of results

I have found interesting information on 23andMe and I am glad I did it, especially the health information. However, there is something off on their algorithm of relationships. They correctly identified the genetic relationship between myself, my Aunt and my half-sister, but they indicated my daughter is their first cousin, versus great-aunt, and aunt. So I don't feel I can trust how they allocate relationships. Until they correct their algorithm, I currently can't recommend 23andMe.

Thank you for your feedback. DNA Relatives estimates a predicted relationship and range using the number of segments and percent DNA shared. Different relationships can share the same percentage of DNA.
For example, your aunt and half sister share approximately 25% of their DNA with you. They would share approximately 12.5% of their DNA with your daughter. Individuals share approximately 12.5% of their DNA with a first cousin, great aunt, or half-aunt.
If needed, you can adjust the listed relationship by setting a known relationship for your DNA Relatives match.
