Thanks for your feedback. 23andMe analyzes autosomal DNA, mitochondrial DNA, and Y-chromosome DNA (males only), and uses SNPs for both Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA analyses. Other genetic ancestry services may use STRs for the Y chromosome and sequencing for mitochondrial DNA. The information provided by STRs and SNPs is not directly comparable. Some people may learn more from one analysis method, while others get more out of the other.

The majority of our features, such as DNA Relatives and Ancestry Composition, analyze your autosomal DNA, which you inherited in equal parts from your father and your mother. Therefore, your results will be a reflection of both your paternal and maternal ancestry. These features generally report on your ancestry from within the past 5-10 generations.

very disappinted in my "experience" with 23andMe

Dear 23andMe, I'm very very disappointed in my "experience"!
Before my son married he went to 23andMe for his DNA tests and was satisfied. Now, he's looking into having a child and asked help for us to make the same DNA test with 23andMe. Nothing compares except the ancestry and frankly to know that I have fair skin and brown eyes for $180 is a joke.
Therefore, NO !!! I will not recommend anyone to have an "experience" with 23andMe, not even my husband, his father.

Testing for exotic chromosomal anomalies without testing for more pressing genetic predispositions such as certain types of cancers, dementias, etc.
under-representation of every population with the exception of European- caucazoid. Test results cannot be generalized for these low rep genetics unless studies were fully controlled- pretty much impossible. No warning or notice that this test is not generalizable.

You receive 65+ personalized genetic reports to help you understand what your DNA says about your health, traits and ancestry. We are working hard to meet your expectations on the types of reports we offer. In the future, we hope to offer reports about genetic risk for serious health conditions.

The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide:
https://www.23andme.com/ancestry_composition_guide/

Your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.

Useless and uninteresting information.

Information is obvious like I have light hair and light eyes. The 41 carrier diseases are obscure, never heard of them. It confirmed what I already knew about my ancestry from family discussions. feel I wasted $200.

We did my daughter ancestry because she was curious and we really had no idea about my wife's side of the family. Once we received the results we spent an hour or two reading over the results and calling other family members asking "did you know we have this or that in our background". My daughter's results have prompted my wife and I to do our next and we are trying to get remaining parents and grandparents to do theirs as well. This has been a real eye opening experience and I am very pleased we chose 23andMe to do the job.
