Pretty useless

I learned that I'm 64% British and Irish...not even sure which is greater. The map is useless and the references pertaining to my 'Neanderthal' component is such a load of tripe I can't believe I paid money to receive this incredibly useless information. Perhaps I'm missing something but the data provided is far too limited.

Thank you for your feedback. 23andMe offers one of the most comprehensive analyses of your DNA ancestry. We provide you with one of the most detailed ancestry composition reports on the market today. You can find out about your ancestral origins, what percent of your DNA comes from populations around the world, your maternal and paternal lines and your neanderthal percentage.
The 23andMe Ancestry Composition feature tells you what percent of your DNA comes from each of 31 populations worldwide. This analysis includes DNA you received from all of your recent ancestors, on both sides of your family. The results reflect where your ancestors lived before the widespread migrations of the past few hundred years.
When people first arrived in the region now known as Great Britain, which includes England, Scotland and Wales, as well as the region of Ireland tens of thousands of years ago, these two regions were physically joined to one another. Today the people of these regions descend from Celtic, Saxon, and Viking ancestors.
I had no idea how much information I would learn from 23andMe! I thought I was mostly German; turns out, my genetic history is quite diverse! It was so cool sharing this information with family and friends, and I bought a kit for my mom to find out how much DNA we share. It was also very comforting to know I was not a carrier for most of the genetic diseases tested; at the same time, it was very empowering to learn that I did carry variants for two different diseases. This is the type of knowledge that I feel every person should have as soon as possible in life. I'd recommend the Health + Ancestry as a gift for anyone.

I expected the German and the Irish in my family tree, but the Native American and the African and sub Sahara was quite a shock!

I have had DNA tests with three different companies and 23 and me is the most accurate and detailed. I have bought kits for so many family members for holidays and birthdays to keep growing our understanding of our DNA. The more relatives you do this the more you learn. Adding my parents changed my results and that was interesting.

1) I found 23 and Me to be thorough and informative about major health traits, ancestery, and genetic components. a. I have always been told that my GF was Cherokee Indian. I have a name that sounds 100% Native American. SURPRISE!!!! I have 73% of my genetic ancestry as Northern Eropean. 53% Scott -Irish, which came from my mothers parents and their parent ariving between 1860 and 1920, which fits their exact dates of arrival from Scottland and Irland , this was a surprise to me.
b. The rest is Nothern European ancestry. Mostly German, French, and other mixes of Northen European descent. The German % was highest, and I found out this was the name changed from the German derivitive to a direct Translation to the English language, which happened to sound like Native American names. c. 18 % of my ancestry came from what is now ,Lebanon, and middle east. This was no surprise ans my GM on fathers side and her Father and the rest of her family came from what was once Northern Africa, Egypt, Syria, and all the countries that are in the region., from the most recent immigrating also to the USA betwn 1860 and 1820. I did think I would have more Lebanese %, as that was the cultural heritage my family most identifies with as the Middle Eastern Countries are very family oriented, and tight clans, revoving around extended families and beliefs and culture.
2) a. Traits and prediposition to Genetic Health issues as provided by 23 and me. I was very happy to know that I had no triats passed down from my Father or Mother of any of the illnesses that I might be Predisposed . Macular Degeneration was the only trait listed and I was already diagnosed with this years ago by my Opthmologist.
3) Muscle Composition. a) I did know that I had fast twitch muscles, however I did not know that there is a certain % of the population that have a genetic sequence in that is found in Elite Athletes. Well after I read that I had the sequence for Elite Athletes it was NO SURPRISE.
I was from the age of 8 to early 20's training as acompetative Swimmer at NATIONALand OLYMPIC levels for Swimming, and have been an allround elite athlete, with scholorships in Field Hockey, Soccer, and and Swimming to Universities.
In summary I am extemely satisfied with the information i recieved from my Genetic studies from 23andme.
****** I am an RN of 20 years, I am the type of person that is on the offensive as an advocate for my Patients and their health status in all areas, Preventative, early detection , and Treatment possibilities if the patient wants to be treated as they see fit with advice from clinicians of all areas. I was NOT AFRAID OF LEARNING MY GENTIC HEALTH INFORMATION> I CANNOT STRESS THAT MOT PEOPLE THINK THOROULY ABOUT DECIDING TO LEARN THEIR GENTIC INFORMATION!
Thank you, to all participants nad to the people that work for 23and me for helping provide the encompassing information to help me be informed of my genetics and my ancesery.

I mostly joined out of curiosity and the health reports. The ancestry reports are wildly inaccurate. For example, if you want to find out if you are Native American, this is not the way to do it. I actually know that I am, I used to visit my Mom's family on reservations but it shows up as only 0.3% on here but no DNA test really has enough information to really test that sort of thing. My Dad is 100% Italian, his parents came from Bologna and it shows up as me bing 1.4% Italian. So, I would only recommend this if you are hoping to find relatives and even then, nobody that you are closely related to could even be on the site. Also, I don't care for the setup of the website, I liked it better when I signed up 4 years ago. I assume the health reports are accurate which is why I will give it at least a *fair* review.

Thank you for your feedback. It is important to note that sometimes, even if a person's great, great grandmother, for instance, was considered to be Native American, the DNA does not reveal the Native American ancestry because evidence is lost each generation. In general, however, Native American ancestry within the last few generations is likely to reveal itself through our features.
Our Ancestry Composition report assigns results based on your genetic similarity to our 31 populations worldwide. These populations refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. If you do not see ancestry that as much as you expected, this is because you more closely resembled our other reference populations genetically. Keep in mind that you randomly inherit 50% of your DNA from each of your parents. For this reason, your ancestry assignments may vary depending on which DNA segments you inherited from each parent.

I originally bought my husband a kit because he was adopted & then I decided to see how much Italian I am. We found his bio aunt & cousin's, who live 30 min away. Shortly after, he was united w/a 1/2 brother via Facebook, who will be coming out to meet my husband in Dec. He then was united w/his father only 8 mths later, last month. Sadly, his bio mother passed away 6 yrs ago. He also has another 1/2 brother who he also met via Facebook. My husband's search for the past 48 yrs is now complete. & myself? I'm not Italian, I'm Jewish! But fortunately, although 23 & Me found I have the BRCA1 gene because of my Jewish ethnicity, I have taken care of my chances of getting cancer by having prophylactic surgery(s) this year. 23 & Me has given my husband a bigger family & myself a longer life!
