Health and Ancestry...a real eye-opener!

Good Fun Experience

I have 3 kids, and had never met anybody I was biologicly related to. Curiousity as well as wanting to know about health issues that either myself or children might have to deal with were the main reason for investing in a kit. The kit has put in contact with quite a few people I never met but am directly related to, and it's been a blast. Along with this, the information I received about my health from 23andMe matched both conditions I was aware of as well as conditions my new found relatives were able to confirm. Getting the results for my Ancestry Composition was good fun as well. Definitely a fun experience I would strongly suggest.

We bought the complete package especially because of the health information and any genetic diseases one should know about. There was a health pre-disposition for a certain diagnosis (which was being treated before this test) and 23 & me had included what to do to avoid such condition one is predisposed to. It also showed another gene which we should know about and the doctors would rarely guessed to test for. Nothing to worry about in this case, but good to know for the wider family. More and more people keep testing, so we have more and more DNA relatives and connected with some of them, exchanging information. Also, there was a rumor in the family and DNA does not lie. It has been confirmed. It is interesting to know where our DNA really came from. I like 23 & me better than Ancestry. People were moving around. 23 & me even found our 3700 year old predecessor on one side and even older one on the other side. And thanks to DNA testing on historic sites, we keep learning more. There is so much more information, your haplogroup, traits, what time one gets up, it is amazing.

It is important to note that sometimes, even if a person's great, great grandmother, for instance, was considered to be Native American, the DNA does not reveal the Native American ancestry because evidence is lost each generation. In general, however, Native American ancestry within the last few generations is likely to reveal itself through our features

MONEY WELL WASTED FOR ME...

Information provided was not useful for my purposes as I already know my hair and eye color (as well as the fact that I have no dimple on my chin, etcetera). My purpose was to gain relevant information regarding potential health issues and, to this end, 23&Me was pretty much useless. I wish the website clearly and effectively disclosed that information pertaining to genetic health predispositions is no longer provided.
Assuming an individual is unable to look in the mirror, assess their own traits or configure even a minimal family history, 23&Me might have some value. Those interested in an ancestral sketch may also be satisfied; but, even at that, the results read somewhat gimmicky to me for the $$ price tag.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

My daughter gave me this for a present, and its the best present I've ever received! I have talked with so many people who are related to me and have been able to figure out how we are related too. The tools that are available on the website are amazing and they are available for everyone to use at no additional charge. I highly recommend 23andme to everyone considering a DNA test. The absolute best company to test with.

My greatest frustration in life is that because I look white and have blue eyes, no one believes me that I am a proud to be African American - Even my own children looked at me skeptical when I told them that both of my parents and all my grandparents and great grandparents were black, I told them I am no different than most descendants of slaves in that we have white ancestors during slavery days and that is how far back my white blood line went back to and they would still look at me and say OK if you think so.
23 & Me was a great gift in that it proved what I already knew - that I am 53% Sub-Saharan African and your report changed my life forever! I have a higher percent of African DNA than several of my darker skinned friends and now when i show them my report, they just look at me and marvel at the power recessive genes can have too sometimes.
Thank you 23 & ME, now you need to make and sell tee shirts with our DNA chart imprinted so I can just point to my percentage when people wonder what race I am!! LOL
