Ancestry DNA Who?

I purchased a Ancestry DNA kit for my grandmother last year not knowing much about 23andMe beforehand. I wish I would've done this for her first! It's so easy to use, faster results, and you get to connect with family for free instead of having to pay a monthly or yearly fee. After she passed unexpectedly last year I decided to buy a kit for myself and see what I could find out about my dad's side as I never knew them. Lets just say I connected with a 2nd cousin who connected me with her mother who is the niece to my dad. I have connected with my dad and sister after 34 years! I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to find out extra health information they didn't know or connect with family you didn't know existed.

I received this kit a while ago and it has really given me some perspective. My family know doesn't know a lot about our families past or who they were. This was able to help me put some the pieces together and learn so much about myself as well. Just a great experience over all!

Worth it!!

When you first get it and look through the entire thing in 2 hours it seems so underwhelming, after all you just spend weeks waiting for your results and 100+ dollars on it. But its so fun to be able to go on week after week and do surveys and look at the new data collected VERY INTERESTING. So far I've gotten one of my friends and my mom to get one and I definatly think that if genetics even slightly interests you, it is a great little test.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Ever wonder who or where you came from? This will give you an Idea of who you are. I was not expecting to have the feeling of belonging to the to something like I had. Its worth it, as you will be more then interested in what your results are.

My 23&me was a mirror to my husbands 23&me. How could everything be the same? Hmmmm
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I have an IDENTICAL TWIN?!

I bought a 23andMe kit because I was interested to find out if I had a genetic marker for Alzheimer's since both my mom's parents had it, and she most likely is developing it. (spoiler alert, I do). I was so intrigued by all the results I got that I convinced my sister to get a kit too. She's my twin and only sibling. We were always told we were fraternal because that's what the doctors told my parents. Well, guess what? They were wrong! We are IDENTICAL TWINS!! How cool is that?!

My Experiences

I have been in 23 & Me for 3 years and have found it fascinating to see what me DNA can tell me about health situations and other predispositions. One thing that I thing is strange is to find relatives like 5th and 6th cousins. Not that they matter to me, but I think some people do this DNA testing and are surprised when a close relative shows up. For example, I have a Nephew that turned up, we exchanged a few messages and he went dark. If you are afraid of finding a potential close relative don't do this. I did it to find relatives as I was adopted and have nothing as far a true relatives.
On the whole my ex[experience has been positive. I give it 4 1/2 donuts out of 5.
