Found my biological family!

I was adopted at Birth and the lawyer who did my adoption destroyed all the documents I could have had access to in order to find my birth parents. I had tried, and struck out, for 19 years. When I got the results of my DNA test back, they pointed me to a family member who was able to connect me to the rest of the family. Unfortunately, my birth mother had died three years ago, but my biological father, and aunt, and many cousins were found. This was life healing that I had desperately wanted, and so did the family!

Being a child of a closed adoption I was interested learning more about my relatives and ancestry. My wife bought me the health and ancestry kit. I got everything I was hoping to find and more.

If it were not for 23andMe...

If it were not for 23andMe, I never would have found my biological family. I was adopted at birth in a closed adoption, so neither I nor my adoptive parents knew the names or origins of my bio-parents. I started looking when I was 18, and boy did I put all of me into it, but 23andMe was the thing that finally tore down the wall in my 30s. As soon as my results came in, I saw it connected me with a great-uncle and his son, the first blood relatives I'd ever known. (I cried as hard as I've ever cried when I saw this.) I messaged them and they helped me get leads, and those leads helped me get more leads, until I tracked down my entire birth family on every side. Thank you. And thank you to the friend who bought me the test kit as a present. It is probably the most meaningful and life-changing gift anyone has ever given me. Now I speak to family members on all sides of my family and I even found two half-siblings. One of them flew me over to his wedding and I got to meet my baby niece. She has my red hair and is a bundle of joy! Thank you, 23andMe, for allowing me to find what should have been mine all along.

I am pleased with the results of the DNA test . It has provided some great family connections. I have 2 areas that I have issues with . Understand I am a newbie on 23&Me, but I have a lot of experience with family genealogy investigation. YouTube tutorials for taking the test are abundant. But tutorials for actual navigation within the software are minimal. I did find one on downloading data to a spreadsheet that was helpful . ( still too early to know if it downloaded only 23&Me generated info or all the family tree data that I added as well. ) The Family Tree that can be created is the best I’ve seen , but I’m unsure whether I can share it with anyone , member or not. This is after putting in pictures, names, dates, locations,. I’d kinda like to be able to share it with other family members . Seems pointless to go through the effort and not be able to share . I’m certain that most people would not have the time or knowledge to build out the Family Tree like I have and why would I do it if it has already been done . I would rather build on a trusted source than start from scratch. That said , I have found some really cool connections , and some astonishing connections that I don’t want to giveaway quite yet until certain family members are informed . Do the test ! Welcome to The Family. Nuts don’t fall far from their trees.

A waste of time and money

The ancestry results just said broadly European. I already knew that. I do not know anyrhing about my mother's parents except that they're probably from Russia. I was hoping that the 23 andme testing could narrow this down or confirm Russia. It does not. It was a waste of time and money for me.

Thank you for your feedback. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.
You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide: https://www.23andme.com/ancestry_composition_guide/
Your results are a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals we are able to continually evolve and improve your results. As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your results over time.

I am glad I participated in trying 23&Me a couple years ago, I was able to find out my true ethnicity that had me wondering all of my life and thankfully I no longer will have to question it. With that said, I am thankful for 23&Me as I was able to meet a 1/2 brother and find my biological mother as well. 23&Me helped fill in many gaps and questions that I had pondered throughout my life!

Thank you for contacting the 23andMe Team. Having Native American DNA is different from having Native American ancestry. We understand that the distinction between ancestry and DNA can cause confusion.
Your results from 23andMe can only show you what can be seen in your DNA. Native American DNA is often lost with time and with every generation and may not be revealed in testing such as ours. For example, it only takes a couple of generations from a full-blooded Native American to lose all trace of Native American DNA.
Currently 23andMe has several features that can reveal genetic evidence of Native American ancestry, although they are not considered a confirmatory test or proof of such ancestry in a legal context.
This does not mean that you do not have Native American ancestry or that your family heritage as passed down through the generations is incorrect.

I know that I am half native American. I'm a registered member of a reservation here in Minnesota. The results said that I am only 9% native American. Either the test results are fabricated or I have different parents .
