Questionable Results

I received a history of my last name and a week later, the DNA results correlated with the name history that had been previously provided. The results did not correlate with what I know of my family history. I submitted a DNA sample to a competitor and the results I had gotten from them correlated with the family history that I was aware of. I don't think that 23 & Me actually performed the DNA testing, but simply game me results that were related to the name history.

Thank you for your feedback. The data that we report is strictly genetic information regarding your genotype (e.g. the A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s at particular locations in your genome), generated through the processing of your saliva by 23andMe. Your profile name does not affect your DNA analysis or results and can be updated at any time.
Our Ancestry Composition report assigns results based on your genetic similarity to our 31 populations worldwide. These populations refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. If you do not see ancestry that you expected, this is because you more closely resembled our other reference populations genetically. Keep in mind that you randomly inherit 50% of your DNA from each of your parents. For this reason, your ancestry assignments may vary depending on which DNA segments you inherited from each parent.

Amazing!

My parents shared a common great-grandmother. I was impressed that 23andMe identified my first cousin on my mother's side under my profile. However, I was really amazed that 23andMe identified this same cousin on my dad's profile as a 5th or 6th cousin. 23andMe picked up genetic information from this common great grandmother even though this was my maternal cousin.

23&Me made a fool out of me

I'm very upset. My original results said that I had Native American ancestry, and 21% Scandinavian. Now my updated results say I have no Native American ancestry and that I'm 31% Scandinavian. What the heck?! I'm very let down by the results. Why did I believe any of this in the first place?!

Thanks for your feedback. Your Ancestry Composition is a living analysis. Using thousands of reference individuals, we are able to continually evolve and improve your results.
As we update our reference data, it will not be uncommon to see slight shifts in your Ancestry Composition. Connecting a biological parent or child to your own 23andMe profile will also allow your Ancestry Composition results to update and reflect this additional genetic information.
If you have additional questions about your results, please contact Customer Care by submitting a request here: https://23and.me/CCRequest.
