Found family I didn't know existed!

My wife ordered me the 23&Me kit because I was adopted and had no health information or knew anything about my heritage. When I received the results the report showed that I had a DNA match with a potential relative, which the report thought was my granddaughter. I reached out to that person and it turns out she is my half-sister on my father's side. I was completely surprised and overjoyed since this was not my goal for doing the test. What an amazing and unexpected outcome. Thank you 23&Me.

Poor data interpretation after Phasing

I find the 23andme experience very informative and satisfying overall, especially after the last update, and plan to continue using the website and adding family members regularly as long as they keep updating the data, results and user experience. But I do have a serious complaints that make sense for anybody who knows a little: after Phasing (including your parents in your data analysis) the interpretations are very poor to the point of making no sense. My chromosomes analysis won't match my parents, saying I have ancestry I couldn't possibly have inherited from them, comparing chromosomes is a mess, as my chromosomes will show ancestries none of my parents have (I mean huge differences, like between European and African, for example). Actually, my results made much more sense without Phasing and now I'm personally frustrated with how my results don't make sense from a logical and sicentific perspetive. However, you can study your family history, world history, and the history of migration and download your raw genome and use other databases and researches that will you give a much better, complex and multificitated analysis, specially if you compare all datas. It takes a lot of research and insight to interpret your data, even though I'm a fan, you can't just rely on 23andme interpretation. To be fair, I read articles and I'm addicted to the experience and have very high expectations.

I've been a customer for a while now, and the frequency of 23andMe updating reports and supplying new information is amazing. It is worth the money and I feel it is accurate enough to be able to rely on.

23andme found some of my cousins that I did not know but after we communicated we were indeed related. So I trust it when they say I am related to someone. I took the health portion also and for the most part it was very right. But it said I was likely born with a full head of hair and wrong! I was born bald and stayed that way for a very long time. When my hair did grow it was very thick and long. Mostly thought they got it right.

Tons of Information

I received the 23andMe kit for Christmas. I have always been interested in ancestry, and the science behind it, so I was very excited. I sent off my sample, and received results between the 6 to 8 week mark. There was a lot of information! I mean a lot! Which is wonderful, but I also felt slightly overwhelmed. The site is great at giving tips on how to use this information; however, users are limited if their parents (or siblings) are not apart of the 23andMe services. Which is the position I am in. Also, some users do not want to share information which means expanding your ancestry could be difficult. I did really love seeing the locations where my ancestors have come from though, and learning what health factors are related to my genetic make-up was eye-opening. I am looking forward to growing with 23andMe as they continue to expand their regions, while narrowing the scope of identifying markers.

Questionable Results

I received a history of my last name and a week later, the DNA results correlated with the name history that had been previously provided. The results did not correlate with what I know of my family history. I submitted a DNA sample to a competitor and the results I had gotten from them correlated with the family history that I was aware of. I don't think that 23 & Me actually performed the DNA testing, but simply game me results that were related to the name history.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for your feedback. The data that we report is strictly genetic information regarding your genotype (e.g. the A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s at particular locations in your genome), generated through the processing of your saliva by 23andMe. Your profile name does not affect your DNA analysis or results and can be updated at any time.
Our Ancestry Composition report assigns results based on your genetic similarity to our 31 populations worldwide. These populations refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. If you do not see ancestry that you expected, this is because you more closely resembled our other reference populations genetically. Keep in mind that you randomly inherit 50% of your DNA from each of your parents. For this reason, your ancestry assignments may vary depending on which DNA segments you inherited from each parent.
