Vague Ancestry Composition

Was very disappointed with the lack of specificity on the ancestry composition--well over 50% "broadly European/broadly Northwestern European." If the capabilities of the test are that limited, I think that should be more clearly conveyed before I plunk down $200 for results that were not at all insightful.

Thank you for your feedback. The population labels in Ancestry Composition refer to genetically similar groups, rather than nationalities. In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.
You can read about the population selection process in more detail in our Ancestry Composition Guide: https://www.23andme.com

The experience has been awesome and I love all the different reports. Going from knowing very little about myself (being adopted) to finding out all this information is just amazing ( a little overwhelming at first, but undoubtedly fantastic!). I've learned more about myself just in reading the reports than I have in 40+ yrs! Plus, a possible relative has already reached out to me. Without 23 and Me, I would never have gotten this far.

Cool, but not worth the cost

The overall experience was cool. It was interesting to find out details about my ancestry, as well as, whether my genetic code showed I was a carrier or not for certain diseases. But the rest of the test told me everything I already knew about myself, dark hair, can roll my tongue, not a supertaster, etc. I don't believe that the results were stunning or eye opening and for the cost, that's what I was hoping for.

I knew that I had siblings but I knew nothing about them. This connected me almost immediately to a half sister. I have communicated with three of the six. Very overwhelming.

Too general.

This was fun and interesting. I got this as a gift. My only complaint really is that the genetic groups are too general and wide. For example one group is England and Ireland, but surely there are many groups within that, Scotch, Welsh, English, Anglo Saxon, Gaelic. However it was fun. My report also took 8 weeks!

Great resource have me a lot of ancestry data. I've always checked demographics as African American. What came back from the DNA analysis states 53+% Northern European and only 42% African. Where the heck is Europe I thought . So, they must be mistaken. There's no one left to ask where did I come from. All older Ancestors are Saints in heaven. NOW, what box do I really check on demographic data forms ? White, Black. Or maybe other

Supposedly my father is 100% French and my mother is 100% German. The results more-or-less bore that out. However the main purpose was to look into Alzheimer's. My father and all of his sisters had it. I found I have "slightly increased risk of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease". The report stimulates me to dig deeper and see what preventative measures I can employ.
