The reports are not specific and overly broad. Don't waste your money

Happily Surprised

I've been wanting to take an ancestry DNA test for more than 10 years. I did a fair amount of research and I'm glad I chose to take the ancestry test with 23 and me. They said the results would take between 6 and 8 weeks but I received my results in about 3 weeks via email. From what I know about my deceased parents' heritages, the results seemed amazingly accurate. There were definitely some surprises and I was excited to see that I'm all the colors of the rainbow. I've already recommend the ancestry DNA test to one of my sisters and I encouraged my husband to get his test done.

I was very disappointed with the report I received. It bascially told me I was of European descent and little else that was valuable.

Thank you for your feedback. The results for Ancestry Composition reflect where your ancestors lived before the widespread migrations of the past few hundred years.
In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.
You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide: https://www.23andme.com/ancestry_composition_guide/

Great Experience

Everything about my experience with 23andMe has been positive. I ordered the Ancestry kit in November and received it in 3 days. I mailed it back the next day and was notified 3 days later that they had received my sample. I received an email from them just 2 weeks later letting me know that they had posted my results. I have tested with all the major companies (Ancestry DNA, Family Tree DNA, and National Geographic's Geno 2.0: The Next Generation) and I definitely think that I received the most accurate results from 23andMe based on what I already knew about my family's origins and our family trees. Their ethnic breakdown is more specific than any of the other companies. They have a larger number of reference groups to compare your DNA to and they include ethnicities in your report that are 0.5% or less. None of the other companies will tell you if you're 0.2% or 0.3% of something. While such a low percentage might not count for some people, others find it interesting, especially if their report only consists of one or two major ethnicities. I think it's great that people can find out how many Neanderthal variants they have and learn about their paternal and maternal haplogroups as well.

I would not recommend purchasing this kit. I do not think they have enough data points to draw any conclusions. My results did not reveal any helpful information considering the price they charge.

Thank you for your feedback. The 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service is the first and only genetic service available directly to you that includes reports that meet FDA standards. You now are able to receive 65+ reports on health, traits and ancestry instead of exclusively ancestry reports.
In terms of no "conclusions" in your Trait reports, keep in mind that most human traits are complex, meaning they are not determined by a single factor. Even when we find genetic factors that have a large effect on a trait, they still explain only a portion of it. This means that we can only determine the likelihood of having that trait. That means there is still the chance of not having that trait.
Many other factors influence traits, including your ancestry, other genes, and other non-genetic factors. That’s why we also include a section in each report that talks about some of these other factors. The results are based only on specific genetic factors that we know about now, but our predictions may get better as we learn more.

Understanding More About Me

I signed up for 23andMe as a project through the local hospital they gave away 5,000 kits for free as a part of a health study of our state. I figured I can help out my state a little bit and I can find out a lot more about me. I'm adopted and even though you can tell physically that I'm African-American and Caucasian knowing what the Caucasian and what the African parts are important to me. Understanding what part of Africa my ancestors came from and what part of Europe my Caucasian side came from was something I always longed to understand. I finally have those answers and so many more. I've learned about myself and why I am the way I am, why I look the way I look, and more. I also hope that eventually my 23andMe results will connect me to other family members that I have that would be the biggest reward of all.
