Mothers sister not listed as a DNA relative!?

I bought the 23andme test for me, my son and aunt. My mothers sister to be exact. I know she or my mother were not adopted and even if they had different fathers I dont understand why were not showing up as DNA relatives? Dont we share the same mitochondrial DNA ? I'm not sure how to answer the next question on the survey. Would I recommend this product to a friend? (I'm not sure anymore).

Thank you for your feedback. If you are not seeing your relative in your DNA Relatives list, they likely aren't opted in to the DNA Relatives feature within their account. Keep in mind that DNA Relatives is an optional feature that we make available to members who have been genotyped by 23andMe. In order to view a match within DNA Relatives, both parties need to participate in this feature. Please ensure that your relative has selected to participate in DNA Relatives.

Useless for Eastern Europeans

This was a huge disappointment. My girlfriend did it before me and she got percentages for countries that she was from so I wanted to see if I was more Lithuanian or Ukrainian. Of course I didn’t get that. I got less than even being told I was Lithuanian and Ukrainian. I was told I was from Eastern Europe, which contains six other countries. Thanks for nothing. After Reading other reviews online of people who are disappointed just like me I think you should put it disclaimer on your website that it doesn’t work for Eastern European people. It would saved me some money. Bitterly disappointed.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Happily Surprised

I've been wanting to take an ancestry DNA test for more than 10 years. I did a fair amount of research and I'm glad I chose to take the ancestry test with 23 and me. They said the results would take between 6 and 8 weeks but I received my results in about 3 weeks via email. From what I know about my deceased parents' heritages, the results seemed amazingly accurate. There were definitely some surprises and I was excited to see that I'm all the colors of the rainbow. I've already recommend the ancestry DNA test to one of my sisters and I encouraged my husband to get his test done.

I was very disappointed with the report I received. It bascially told me I was of European descent and little else that was valuable.

Thank you for your feedback. The results for Ancestry Composition reflect where your ancestors lived before the widespread migrations of the past few hundred years.

In general, we sought to make the populations as small as possible, subject to the constraint of being able to distinguish between them. Populations may be inherently difficult to distinguish because of historical mixing, or we might not have had enough data to tell them apart.

You can read about the population selection process in more detail in the corresponding section of the Ancestry Composition Guide:

Great Experience

Everything about my experience with 23andMe has been positive. I ordered the Ancestry kit in November and received it in 3 days. I mailed it back the next day and was notified 3 days later that they had received my sample. I received an email from them just 2 weeks later letting me know that they had posted my results. I have tested with all the major companies (Ancestry DNA, Family Tree DNA, and National Geographic's Geno 2.0: The Next Generation) and I definitely think that I received the most accurate results from 23andMe based on what I already knew about my family's origins and our family trees. Their ethnic breakdown is more specific than any of the other companies. They have a larger number of reference groups to compare your DNA to and they include ethnicities in your report that are 0.5% or less. None of the other companies will tell you if you're 0.2% or 0.3% of something. While such a low percentage might not count for some people, others find it interesting, especially if their report only consists of one or two major ethnicities. I think it's great that people can find out how many Neanderthal variants they have and learn about their paternal and maternal haplogroups as well.
